I thought the 330 plug in ATL was 13,1xx. Couldn’t someone use a VD to displace into that category despite there being no posted vacancies?
(Assuming the person whose seniority they were “using” is above 13,1xx)

Does that affect other people’s ability to VD bid into the category?

Yes because they only fly the line like 3 months a year and they get to pick what base they fly out of during those months I believe. 80ktsclamp will know better.

As said before several times, look at the Projected Category list (published after each AE) for the October 2018 bid period. This is probably your most accurate snapshot of how the various categories sit when the music stops and the MDs/VDs begin. SLIs move in and out based on their fly-breaks and aren't really "in the category" for MD/VD purposes.

Denny is correct but there is an exception whereby you can VD out of a category that has MDs slated and use your own seniority (instead of the seniority of the junior pilot you are "volunteering" for) to get somewhere.

Under 22.F.6.a., "[a] pilot who holds a VD may...displace into a category to fill an existing vacancy that his seniority entitles him to hold." The key is, there has to be a vacancy (AE) in that category at the time of the displacement.

It is extremely unlikely (emphasis for Sailing who skims over qualifiers and likes to argue just to argue) but...for illustration purposes, maybe there exists a very senior ATL M88 Captain who recently bid into the category and still has some remaining seat freeze (okay, okay....stretching the example just a bit....not sure any of those in the top 50 have been to a formal school house qual program in 20+ years). And maybe that M88 Captain decides now is the time to become an A350 Capt to finish out his/her glory years. Because there are 30 DTW A350 Captain slots on this bid, that uber-senior M88 Captain w/a seat freeze could VD out of ATL and into the left seat of the A350 where he/she will sip copious amounts of airplane water espresso while enjoying the fresh air of PVG.

In reality (again, for Sailing), that provision won't come into play seeing as any vacancy in this bid (A350 Captain excepted) is attainable by all of those being MD'd, much less anyone senior to them looking for a VD.

That is hilarious. I just spit my home brewed, filtered water espresso all over the keyboard.

Let’s get one thing clear: it is not correct that the MD plug can only hold narrowbody. The plug on the 765B in NYC is at nearly 13,000!

Also, I get tired of talking to people that have disdain for those that choose to VD. It is not a bad thing to VD and for some it makes sense. If I am 100 from the bottom on the 88A, I can hold around 50% on the ER in most bases. This is particularly true in LAX and SEA. If a 51-100 M88A pilot lives west of the Mississippi, I can understand that may be a better option vs going back to reserve in ATL.

It is also worth pointing out that ATL will see few to no displacements from MSP since MSP pilots will have new 320/73N Captain seats to displace to. Those that choose to stay on the 88 will stay at the bottom for a while before they get displaced. Bottom reserve on a dying fleet sucks.

There is more to these situations than just a free seat lock boys and girls.

You might want to put down the Jameson and/or Guiness and look a bit closer. 😁

On the October 2018 projected category list, the most junior awarded ATL M88 Captain has a 13,308 seniority # while the most junior NYC 765 FO has a 12,931 seniority #.

I was referring to the VD number at 12,300 that those senior would be bidding at, sorry for the confusion.
