Default 03 July AE

I recall reading an email from flight OPS that said they were closing MSPM88 on the next AE but I can't remember the (current) ATL plan. Is there a plan, and if so what is it? I can't remember when the next reduction will happen, if they will gradually draw the category down, or if they plan to chop it like they're doing to MSP.

Thanks!

ATL will maintain its current size through the end of next summer before starting to draw down then. There may be a handful more displacements of ATL 88A this AE.

Thanks.

As a follow-on, how will the company deal with displacements vs. seniority in the expanding MSP categories? I understand how displacements and secondary displacements work in a static category but not in a growing category. For example let's use MSP320B where the plug is 12,495. Hypothetically, if they advertised only 1 position for MSP320B and only 2 people bid it: somebody (who was not displaced) with a seniority number of 12,000 a displaced MSP88B with a seniority number of 12,496, who would get the vacant position?

The question just boils down to the statement flight ops made in that they intend to replace M88 positions 1:1 in MSP. If somebody already in MSP wants to stay in MSP are they guaranteed to stay there or can somebody senior from another base snipe those positions?

Just because you are currently in MSP is no guarantee that you'll still be able to continue to hold it. So yes, senior pilots will be able to bid in to MSP taking spots from people already there. No one really knows how much of that will happen. This will also be offset some by current MSP pilots voluntarily bidding to other bases.

In your hypo, 12,000 would get it.

22.F.13 states that "[a] pilot who holds an MD may displace a pilot in any category who is junior to him and who was in such category on the award date of his MD." In this case, the 12,496 pilot has no one to displace because the junior pilot in your hypo is 12,495. The system then looks to fill the one hypothetical vacancy under 22.E.1 so it awards an AE to the senior pilot (#12,000). As an aside, this scenario still honors the exception to 22.E.1 because #12,000 can get into the category via an AE and no surplus would be created because 12,496 still doesn't have the seniority to displace anyone in that category.

With MDs/VDs in play, no one is guaranteed anything. Someone from another base could "snipe" one of those positions if their seniority permits thereby sending the Minny pilot to ATL (or NYC or LAX or any other base).

They had better put a ton of 320B and 737B in MSP. I wouldn't count on the opening of the 330 category in MSP to save too many guys/gals that are currently there. There are a ton of senior 330 guys in DTW and NYC that commute from MSP that are salivating like a dog for that category to open. At the end of the day bid what you want but protect yourself with displacement preferences.

The plan per Crew Resources is to put one for one 737/320 crews to replace the M88 base. They will also add about 50 330 crews. It will be an interesting bid in MSP.

Seats sure...but that has no bearing on who will actually fill them.

It's not as much as you'd think. According to the "Commuter Calculator" on the ALPA site, only 112 pilots living within 150 miles of MPS and commute to JFK. For DTW, that number is 138. Across all categories... So really not that many.

All I know is there are plenty of 6 day trips with a MSP layover on the 330 that show up in the DTW 330B open time. So, more trips than there are FOs who bid them apparently. Sure, there are some DTW/NYC 330 guys who will jump to a MSP base, but it's not tons.

Isn’t the 330 category only going to be 50ish crews? All it would take is for 1/4 of this guys to do it and that would chew up a large chunk of the slots....
