Default August SILS - 40 hours....

Does anyone know how vacation (which I have in August) effects a SILS? If I bid and receive a SILS, would I be short-changed out of vacation pay or would it be 40 hours PLUS vacation? Anyone? Anyone?? thanks.

You aren't eligible for an SIL if you have vacation.

Just read the union memo on this. Don’t get the outrage.

In what universe is getting 40 hours of pay for getting the whole month off a bad thing.

I get they used to be worth more but no ones getting their arms twisted here. Either it’s worth it and you bid it or it isn’t and you don’t.

I’m in for 40 hours and an entire summer month off. If I can hold it that is.

Me neither.

But it sure makes the MEC look tough.

I think it was less about the money and more about the violation of LOA#2 and thus the PWA...again. The Company may commence awarding SILs in any bid period, following notification and concurrence of the MEC Scheduling Committee Chairman.. I guess that didn't happen.

DID they not ask or did the chairman say no?

The letter reads like they don’t support them at their present measly value. I guess the company is cheating me by paying me $12k to stay home and do nothing. Good thing I've got someone looking out for me.

I 100% agree with you. It's not like they're forcing people to take one either, it's entirely voluntary. Why does the union have a problem with this when they didn't have a problem with the KLOAs the company offered this winter for ZERO pay?!

I thought the issue was the company publishing the SILs even though the union said hold your horses which was a contract violation. Could be wrong.

It could be the schedule inflexibility for those remaining pilots who would like some summer scheduling flexibility. If you rob them of all or most of their blue days and force more reserve pilots to fill up (or even go to ALV plus 15), there's definitely a price paid for those 40-hour SILS...a price paid by union brethren and not by the company. I can see both sides; it's not black and white, IMHO.

Possibly but I doubt the company offers enough SILs to cut staffing enough to cause them (and by default, us) issues. For my category I think we had 8 SILs offered for July and 6 or 7 were bid but reserve days are 90% blue including the entire July 4th week.
