It seems like a large number of their trips start or end with a dead head and sooner or later the company is going to tire of paying that credit. It wouldn't surprise me if the status of CVG ended up being a pawn during C19 negotiations.

Newbie QOL for most who live in Cincinnati is probably better commuting to DTW. I also don't live there, so I could be way off.
How would it be a pawn in negotiations?
I would also take a look at the trips. Very few begin or end with a DH. The current open time has 17 trips. 1 has a DH back to CVG from ATL. The category is very efficient which is why it’s still open and they are replacing pilots when they bid out.
It’s highly likely it will remain open long term.

I guess I'd have to look at the bid pack; I could be completely wrong. When I watch daily trip coverage go out, it seems to have a lot of trips that start and/or end with DH. Does the open time (that by definition folks must not want) represent normal trips out of CVG?

Re:negotiations pawn...I could see management threatening to shut it down, or offering to keep it open in some quid pro quo. I guess time will tell ...

Take a look at the bid package. Almost nothing DH’s in or out of CVG.

CVG just expanded the 737 base there, by a fair amount.

Last I saw, it was almost all people who live nearby, almost no commuters (it's a tough commute from most places, mostly RJs)

It's ~180 pilots or ~1.25% of the seniority list...not sure that is much negotiating capital. Sure a lot of them are senior, but I would guess they could be absorbed pretty easily into other bases. That said, I hope it's not closed for the sake of those based there. But if it came down to that base or some big ask (or in exchange for our ask), I'd be willing to gamble and see if they're bluffing.
