A pilot shortage only lasts as long as it takes to train a pilot. If you pay them, they will come.
A huge reason we have a shortage today is because we raised the age already. Thousands of potential pilots graduating from high school from 2001 to 2008 or so decided to do something else more rewarding than joking an I dusted that costs $100k+ to join and pays $20k-$30k got several years. If we raise it again, people considering going to school for flying will likely decide to do something else.
I see friends slightly getting interested again after seeing wages go up again. Age 70 happens, wages at the bottom go down, supply dwindle......again. It’s stupid.

The shortage was caused by the 1500 hr requirement. Before that someone could get hired to the right seat of a commuter with 250 hrs and a commercial ticket. Most had more but 250 hours was doable. Adding a few years to the age limit would just give people more time to get the ATP.

No one with less than 1500 hours has any business flying a jet under 121 — military or major airline ab initio programs aside.

If you have to work to 65 you lose.
Of course medical coverage plays huge into that, and as a tricare beneficiary my viewpoint is different than those without. One reason I think retiree medical would be a huge win on the next contract. Wouldn't do anything for me directly but the 2nd and 3rd order affects could be significant in terms of seniority and associated pay and qol.
