The version of the A330-900 Delta is getting has a range of 6550 miles assuming a very long runway. The 7200 mile version is a future version with 251 ton gross weight. It’s not yet available. The current 242 ton A330-300’s have a range of 6350 miles. The NEO only gains 300 miles. All of the above are max range under perfect conditions. In reality the 242 ton A330-300 often struggles on the TLV to JFK leg which is right at 5000 miles. Flying distance is usually about 5200 miles because of the need to avoid war zones.

Did you mean 242 tonne and 251 tonne?

Edit: Just read SF's post. If it is correct then it's a different story. I wonder if the 787 range of 7600 is accurate.

Thanks Mesabah. Given all the hoopla over the 787, those figures are pretty interesting. For passengers, the 330 is a pretty comfortable ride.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, with a range of 14,800km to 15,750km (8,000nmi to 8,500nmi), stands third among the 10 longest range airliners in the world.
To make it more confusing a standard 787-900 is flying Perth to London at 9000 miles. No idea on what kind of load restrictions they might have.

The irony here is that the airplane that DAL effectively convinced Airbus to build is having sluggish sales. As a result DAL could very well get a sweetheart deal on the jet Airbus decided to build because of RA.......

Speculating here, but I’d venture to say the 330 holds more gas, so it’d probably have to burn it all to get the max range. Does the 330 hold more cargo/pax than the 787?
I have no idea, but just curious if you had the numbers, it’d help figure out what works best for Delta.
