I'm wondering the same things. It seems if they don't offer all the positions, they don't get to offer them to new hires.
Just to be clear they did not say they would not backfill. They stated they may not backfill all positions. That’s a big difference from will not backfill.

Hasn't that been boiler plate on every AE.

Pretty much and every time a bid is posted the forum erupts with the zero backfill chant to add to all the other non existent bogeymen.
In this case however I suspect they will wait for the next bid for at least a portion of the backfill.

I guess I just don't get it. If AEs leave holes to be filled, does it matter if its now or later that they get filled? You will train and be in position when your seniority holds it. Within an AE, bypass and reinstatement or working the system for time off is all I see as possible complaints. I don't change seats much so it really doesn't apply to me so I'm wondering why the backfill consternation?

I’m talking new hires that can break their 2 year seat lock by bidding to another base / equipment. They can then bid back to ATL on the April bid. I’ve flown with many FOs that have or plan on using this strategy.

Valid. I'm just reading between the lines given the fact that we're supposed to have a big bid in a few months. I'm actually all for them pushing any needed backfills back a few months, gives pilots a few more months to finish seat locks so they can move fleets if they so choose. On the other hand, they may be doing it to help counter displacements...which I don't care for.

I thought I had read that CR didnt want to do 365 day AE, that they found them to be inefficeint. And they would do smaller ones? Am I making this up?

It changes with the wind.

“Smaller, more frequent AE’s.” It appears to change on a 2-yr. cycle.
