Delta Connection and FWV

Why are we not sharing our turbulence app with DCI carriers...not saying this would have been prevented it but, after all they are our customers. It was a DC E175 aircraft btw

It looks like the turbulence was well forecast. In fact when I was based out if LAX you always knew to be very careful crossing the Sierra area with a major front moving through. Hard to imagine what they were thinking flying that area with the flight attendants up and serving. If a forecast for potential severe turbulence was not enough I doubt the app would have made any difference.

Apps we use on the job are subject to regulations, I would bet they want to share, but I doubt they can without major hurdles.

I could see Endeavor getting it eventually, but only if all of the aircraft end up with wifi. I don't believe we'd let anyone have it who would then be using it to the benefit of flights they operate for other carriers.

All the 3 class DCI RJs have WiFi, and they all have the SSID we have on our jets...try and pull up FWV next time you’re on one, works just fine. Infrastructure is there, switch just needs to be flipped...

Gunfighter 02-14-2019 09:57 AM

I use it when commuting to see how bad I will get bounced around.

Does the flight plan load when you put in the compass/skywest/endeavor flight number?

zrls124 02-14-2019 10:18 AM

Maybe a good wakeup call for Delta to collaborate more with their regional partners when it comes to things like this. Compass uses iPad's and has wifi. It's hard to think of a reason why they shouldn't have access to the FWV. They are flying the same Delta passengers.

With the weather in the area it doesn't seem like there would be a smooth ride over the Sierra's, but it's also hard to know what type of information they were given by dispatch and ATC. The Compass crews are professionals, and I highly doubt the FA's would have been out of their seats if the crew had any idea the ride was going to get bad.

The forecast all day was for possible severe turbulence.

You got the link for this severe sigmet that was issued before before this flight dispatched? Just curious as you seem to have some good information your withholding?

It’s called ForeFlight, great app! Not to mention all the news stations discussing one of the biggest snow storms of the decade in the Sierra’s. 4 to 6 feet at Mammoth for the skiers in the crowd.

Yeah we use WSI, it’s good. I flew the other direction that day but didn’t see any SEV Sigmet, just MOD in that area. The severe sigmet I did see was issued after the report by the E75, I assume the incident A/C.

DL doesn’t allow any Gogo use by DCI however another partner does allow the use of WiFi for our turbulence app.

Sierra cement. Champagne powder, Steamboat is getting dumped too. Snow snob?

Not all of Endeavor's RJs are 3 class is my point, so no wifi for a fair number of their flights to use for it.

I expect part of it is a desire to ensure they don't take advantage of it for their non-Delta passengers when flying for other airlines, but another part might just be a lack of bandwidth to support all the DCI aircraft in addition to the ML flights.

flydiamond 02-14-2019 04:46 PM

Endeavor has been told we are getting it with the next version of our iPads, coming in about 12 months. Also digital releases, flight family, etc.

If we don't share FWV we should at least require them to watch this video:

Wouldn’t be applicable in this case. The DCI birds Compass flies are OWNED BY Delta.

savedbythevnav 02-18-2019 05:21 PM

We were recently approved to use WSI at OO, but right now the backdoor on the WiFi only works on our UAL birds. Allegedly, it will be opened up to function on the DL ones as well "soon"

nkbux 02-19-2019 05:39 AM

Wish we had that function at NK... we do have foreflight...how does the app work? Has it proven to be accurate and trustworthy?

The app works well. I think it’s pretty conservative but the turbulence models are all very helpful. I suspect it’ll be helpful in the summertime when thunderstorm season is in full swing.

Definitely better than nothing. In the past we just received auto-print outs from ACARS which were typically wrong, out of date and printed 2 hours past the fixes involved.

Yeah, not like the tablets go with the pilots or anything... oh wait.

yea but there's no backdoor wifi on the AA birds at Compass so it's not like they could operate an AA flight using Deltas FWV. No reason CPZ Delta flights couldn't use the FWV as those airplanes have the backdoor Wifi for it.

NeverFlexTO 02-21-2019 12:26 AM

Like I said the FWV use Enroute on any DL or DCI aircraft requires WiFi over a certain SSID network (that’s already there) unless you’re on the ground...it could very easily be blacklisted on other airlines SSIDs, if you wanted to use it on a non DL/DCI aircraft you’d have to purchase the WiFi access for that specific flight.

It’s a situational awareness tool, last I checked having more situational awareness is a good thing
