Default 30 in 168 Rest

I am trying to figure this out and am getting more and more confused (my natural state as of late ).

I started SC last Sunday at 1000 and have been on duty straight through with no 30 hour break. I was just assigned another SC for tomorrow (Friday) at 1000 and was curious as to how long they can use me.

FAR 177 says this:

“30-in-168” Before beginning any reserve availability period (RAP) or FDP, a pilot must have received
at least 30 consecutive hours free of duty within the 168 consecutive hours (seven 24-hour periods)
immediately preceding the start of the RAP or FDP.

So do I go back to 30 hours prior to starting SC at 1000 on Sunday, which would be 0400 of last Saturday and go forward 168 hours?

If so, starting at 0400 on Saturday and going forward 168 takes me until this coming Saturday at 0400. What confuses me is the verbiage "... preceding the start ...." Do I need to be finished by this time or can I start a trip up to this time?

I think I am good to start a duty period tomorrow since I meet the 168 hour look-back but could not fly on Saturday. I guess they could fly me somewhere tomorrow and DH me home on Saturday.

I called DALPA earlier today- got the voicemail and they blew me off all day.

I called scheduling talked to two different schedulers, neither of which could give me drop dead time but both assured me the WOPR would flag any illegal assignment.

Any FAR 117 Ninjas out there?

The break should start at 138 hrs of continuous duty. It can vary if you deadhead after that time.

It would appear you could still be on call but not usable until you get 30 hours.

If you started at 0400 on Saturday, you are usable till 2200 on Friday unless dhd.

Your last 30 hours of rest began at 4am Saturday morning. Your FDP needs to begin NLT 0400 the next Saturday (tomorrow). Practically speaking this is what they could give you: a trip that signs in today that has 30 hours of rest tonight (assuming you have more RES days after tomorrow), a 1 day trip, or a trip that flies today and deadheads you home tomorrow. I suppose they could also give you a 2 day trip if Saturday's FDP begins prior to 0400.

As I understand it, the key is getting 30 hours of rest in the previous 168 prior to the beginning of your FDP. This means you can exceed 30/168 during that FDP, as long as you were legal when you signed in.

SC assignments don't always make sense. My last SC began at 1400 and I turned into a 30/168 pumpkin at 1600. Last month they gave me 2 SC assignments in a row when I was already illegal due to 60/168 duty.

You can also be assigned rest, effectively ending your short call. This happened to me so they could make me legal 30 hours later for whatever they needed to cover. Short call is just a response window, what they make you do can vary and can include DH, rest or fly. This is the easiest way to knock out one of your 7 SCs.

Keep in mind the 30hr rest needs to be assigned prospectively. It can't be a 24hr rest that then turned into a 30hr rest. I am not sure how DL notifies you of assigned SC periods, but something to keep in mind.

Were you notified at least 30hrs prior to 1000 last Sunday that you would be on SC?

What was your schedule before last Sunday? I will assume the likely scenario that you had at least 2 X-days on Friday and Saturday, and then they gave you SC on your first reserve day at 1000 on Sunday. In this case your 30 hours of rest started at 1800 on Friday night. The time period from 2400-1000 on Sunday morning was not prospectively identified as rest when you went off duty on you last on call day, so it doesn’t count. The latest you could have started a RAP/FDP was 1800 tonight. So they could get a full day’s use out of you today but would need to give you 30 hours before your next RAP/FDP.

Seriously!

Got the penalty lap taken off my last rotation for 30/168...don't know why, how, or what but I skedaddled home 6 hours early, before they could change their mind!

Really? Very interesting, I am (was?) pretty sure that if you legally sign in for an FDP, if you're 30/168 legal for the 1st leg then you're 30/168 legal for all legs. *shrug* Definitely a good deal though, I'm 100% in favor of GSing out the penalty lap and letting guys go home .

Little bit O' thread necromancy.

In the middle of a 17 day reserve block that spills into December.

Started long call at 0001 on the 16th (last saturday)

1600-0100 short call Sat/Sun and Sun/Mon

Long call since. Have not been assigned rest.

I'm a pumpkin at 1800 Thursday if I'm crunching this out right?
