Sure. Go sit NYC short call from ATL and tell me how that works when you don't make it on time.

Have you had this provision at a prior airline? I have and no amount of lipstick on that pig would make it bearable unless it were 100% voluntary on the reserve’s part.

You have to be “promptly available.” This is what the contract says.

This has been generally accepted to be 2 hours under normal conditions. This is not written in the contract.

The beauty of the ambiguity is that it protects the pilots if there is a wreck or weather issue.

I have not....but I’m open to anything if the wording is right, like;

Voluntary only, and each day sitting Standby reduces total reserve days required by one, and adds 2 hours pay above Reserve Guarantee

I don't think the company could afford what would make airport reserve palatable. I'd do it if completely voluntary, for 2.5 hours pay above the guarantee (whether used or unused).

THIS. It is NOT 2 hours, is not written anywhere official, and should stay that way for our protection.

That obviously does not give you the license to sit short call for DTW from Cali... Those guys ruined it for the rest of us .

I don't think anyone is advocating to make the 2 hours a hard and fast set in stone thing in the PWA, are they?

I think it is confusion as the information is passed from person to person.

Q1) Someone asks how long is the call out for short call? A) promptly available. Q2) well how long is that? A) about 2 hours.

Fast forward weeks/months/years and people only remember 2hours as that is easier to stick in the mind. Then when the question is asked again the quick response comes out as 2 hours. Not malicious just how information changes from here say instead of reading the source document.

My opinion only.

Not from our side. But we would be wise to maintain/spread awareness in case the company tries, be in in section 6 or with a misinformed Crew Scheduler.

I know YOU know this, but for the newer pilots/OP... As long as you are actually in position, don't get a ticket or drive unsafely trying to get there in 120 minutes - if needed, tell CS you'll be there as soon as you can, and give them a realistic time frame with known & legitimate traffic/weather/other issues.

The FOM was recently updated. The pilot must be “able to promptly report for an assignment” and “must be in the general area of the base.” 2 hours is a hard number if using the commuting exemption. FOM 3.2.3
