APD reset

I'm confused about when when my "old" APD expires, as evidenced by the many years APDs have gone unused for fear of inadvertently burning the ensuing APD by stepping over the cutoff. Yes, I keep mine as a silver bullet to use on a rainy day, especially because my anniversary date is in the summer, when I am always trying to maximize time off with family, if not make some extra pay. I've used only two ever, but earlier in the cycle and with satisfactory results, but with a lingering sense of anguish over an early pull of the trigger.

PWA Section 23 10 b says an APD will be granted if (among other conditions) "pilot has not been granted an APD since the first day of the bid period containing the last anniversary of his date of hire..."

I'm hung up on the definition of has not been granted, much like Bill Clinton belabored the meaning of the word "is!" As in, if I were granted an APD during the PCS run that occurs at 0700 on Saturday, July 20, the transaction (i.e. grant) clearly occurs prior to the first day of the bid period that contains my DOH anniversary. I was hired on August 4th. The pairing I would want to divest happens to depart on August 27.

My gut tells me the contractual language intent is to count the date of the rotation departure as the "set-point" for the APD utilization, but the language is not just unclear to me, but seemingly implicit that what counts is the date of execution. These are two points in time that can be weeks apart, and in this case five weeks, so I'm hopeful I can initiate the transaction this week relative to a considerably future rotation, and still have a new APD bestowed upon me soon. Is that just wishful thinking of my feeble legalese digestive system? Cause I want to use my APD that has been on the books for nearly 12 months, and have that APD replaced in short order for use in the next year.

I will be most appreciative of explanations of how the annual APD expiration/replenishment works.

It renews the bid period that encapsulates your hire date.
IE if you wanna use one and had an aug hire date you have to use it in July bid period.
If you drop an aug trip you will not have another APD till next aug. sorry

I think you meant to say "when does my APD reset?"

sailingfun 07-19-2019 03:31 AM

You also have 2 IVD’s so three silver bullets total.

Good point. IVD good for up to 4 days total, in no more than 2 instances. 23.H.11.b

The thread title said exactly that, with less words, no?

If you are implying my overall post was too long-winded, you might not be wrong. I was just trying to get my thought process and question accurately conveyed. Thanks to everyone that provided insightful answers.

Uhhhh is this a trick question? Since they are individual VACATION days I’d say you would get them with the new vacation year...

I never thought the IVD would be much of anything when we added it into the current contract, but it’s turned out to be a very useful tool. I love the IVD!

The beginning of the Vacation year, 1 April. 23.H.11.b

GogglesPisano 07-20-2019 08:42 AM

I just used 2 IVD's to drop 2 RES days. Now, because of another vacation week, I'm working only 12 RES days in AUG and getting 84hrs pay.

God bless whoever thought up the IVD.

Hossharris 07-20-2019 11:25 AM

You also can’t IVD if you have already used your vacation for the vacation year.

You have to have future vacation days (in the vacation year) to use.

But I didn’t go anywhere fun on my previous vacation.

One of the few perks of a March or February vacation.

I bid a week for Super Bowl vacation and use IVD days from it.

If you use 2 IVDs from a February vacation to drop a trip (or two) in the preceding August... do you get paid 5 but still have 7 off for vacation in Feb? Or Does PBS build you a schedule with only 5 vacation days in it? I've never used them - trying to figure out the implications.

The future vacation period is reduced by the number of IVDs you take from it because you get paid the value of the vacation days used to drop those trips.

PBS knows you only have 5 days left, so when the vacation comes around, 5 days of pay and 5 vacation days for bidding.

I’ve mentioned it before but don’t forget about using the VACB provision as well. It pays more than an IVD and leaves the amount of accrued vacation days unaffected.

Not knowing about this, I clearly need to learn more.

While the number of Vacation days remain unaffected, isn't there an impact down the road when you get to your last week of vacation for the year? I believe PBS will see the number of vacation days for the month and assign the normal value for line construction purposes. When your award is uploaded into DBMS, your reduced vacation bank will be applied and you will have a short month. For example, if you use vacation bank to cover the full value of a dropped 5 day trip, your final vacation week could pay $0, but you will have the full week of hard no-fly days of vacation on your line. Is that right?

That’s correct. It pulls hours from your vacation bank but the vacation days themselves remain intact. It appeals to those of us that value time off throughout the year more than getting extra pay in a particular vacation month. It won’t appeal to everything but it’s a nice tool to have in the toolbelt. I try to use 2 to 3 VACB days in a given vacation vacation year. That puts me at “break even” for pay in a month in which I then have vacation.
