It goes back to the merger and how many company personnel travel between those cities. To not upset revenue pax, they put a stop to all company people getting upgrades on that route both ways.

I guess it's better to **** off the exhausted pilots coming in from international ops than the free upgraded passengers.

If you wait and check in on the website inside of 24 hours and click on “change seat” it will let you select any comfort plus seats that have not been previously booked. I was having issues previously to my last 2 trips because I was adding my name to the reservation more than 24 hours out and trying to select a seat then. I would check in at the 24 hour point but it only recognized me as basic economy or whatever. My last 3 deadheads have worked as advertised by waiting.
