Sick leave
 

I’ve been hearing stories of people who rarely use sick time (like 10 hrs or less in years) having to verify sick leave from July. I don’t know if management is turning up the rhetoric and wielding their sword or what, but that seems pretty ridiculous to me, to make someone verify because they had a lot of Green Slips and coverage issues due to IROPs (which is why I assume they’re making him verify?) one big happy family...I read it on delta net. It’s true.

You have been hearing stories of people or one story? I used more sick leave in the last year than anytime in my career except for a surgery and have not heard a word.

I’ve heard more than one instance. That’s why this is perplexing, I’ve been hovering at the QHCP threshold all year and never heard a word. Perhaps it was the crew resources available last year, suffice to say I’ve heard more than one? I know the individuals in question and can confirm their lack of use and requirement to verify for July.

I don’t understand the situation. Are you saying that he was under the 100 hours and had used less than 50 the last 2 years and has to verify because “..........”?

There are quite a few things listed in the PWA that can’t be used “solely” question a sick leave event(s). If somebody is being asked to verify outside of what is normally required, then they probably believe they have a good faith reason and GS volume would not be one.

When I have seen someone questioned when they otherwise don’t meet the normal reasons, they have done something that would cause the company to question their sick leave like trying to jumpseat to Cabo on UAL while our sick etc.

Soooooooo I should call in sick every once in a while even when I'm not sick, just to avoid suspicion?

I’m thinking there was an issue with the proximity in time of the sick call to report that might trigger suspicion. i.e. calling sick instead of unable to commute. Especially if it caused a delay.

It’s possible, I guess there’s always two sides. But, I’ve never heard of anyone getting asked to verify outside of the QHCP requirement, especially with historically low usage. There may be circumstances that I’m unaware of.

If a guy has a PD and Swapboard pickup listed for a couple of weeks, no takers, unable to drop, and then calls in sick, the CPO might consider that a "good faith" reason to ask a couple of questions. But if the pilot's usual sick use is low I still have a harder time believing that such a sick call would be questioned.

Don't forget the tertiary benefits management gains even by mention of these verifications. It's not all about catching someone red handed... it's spreading the preemptive word that you are always at risk of having to verify.
