A330-900

What is our total count on A330-900 is it 35 or are we going to take the 2 WOW aircraft for a total of 37. Also how many are we scheduled to receive in 2020?

LumberJack 10-15-2019 04:01 PM

To answer your second question we're supposed to finish 2020 with 8 330-900's.

Denny Crane 10-15-2019 07:16 PM

I believe we have four currently. Last I heard we are supposed to get 7 in 2020. Don’t know the eventual total.

Have you flown it yet, Denny? What’s your take? I think it’s a really good looking aircraft. Some day, maybe.

37 total. Unless they made another change I see 7 next year but one arrives in Jan of 2021 so they may count that as the eighth depending on closing date.

I’ve flown it a lot (all trips last month). I like it. Has some stuff that needs to be worked out but, overall, a good plane. I’m DHing home from PVG on one as I write this post.

Kinda funny but it lands smoother than the other 330’s. The rear landing gear settles a lot smoother on to the runway.

I should have added that I really like the rest facility on the -900 too.

Dang. My one landing on the -900 was good and I was assuming it was talent rather than luck.

It’s official. I need to fly with this man before he retires... my ego demands it.

I guarantee it!!! I’m super fun with a drink or two in me... oh wait. Is that a tacit cry for help? 330 or bust! :D

GuardPolice 10-21-2019 06:06 AM

Minor correction, 2 get pushed into 2020 and one earlier in 2021.

WakeWash 10-21-2019 09:06 AM

So these two leased ones are 2 more on top of the rest? And not just a decision to lease 2 instead of buy and receive them earlier?

Yes, the previous total was 35 - these are on top of that, bringing the total to 37.

I suspect these two aircraft were originally leased for WOW. I also suspect Delta got a very good deal on the aircraft. The A330-900 is not selling well. It’s leasing even worse.

Sputnik 10-21-2019 11:33 AM

Any idea why?

Basically the Neos were late to the party. Airlines jumped on the 787 for the fuel economy and savings. Neos great airplanes just late to the party. On the plus side should make for great acquisition costs for Delta.

Hopefully the late arrival will result in less bugs initially, i.e. battery fires.

Planetrain 10-21-2019 12:03 PM

Great news!

With the GTF widebody engines hitting the market in the next five years, I wonder what the viability of the plastic planes will be then. An Ultrafan A330 would have more than 9,000nm of range.

BoilerUP 10-21-2019 02:19 PM

Given all the issues RR has with the Trent 1000, I wouldn't be holding my breath for the Ultrafan.

They already had to move the engines forward and up to get enough ground clearance on the NEO. I doubt there is more ground clearance to be had unless it’s a major redesign.

35 year old airframe the airlines told Airbus they did not want back in the mid 2000’s resulting in Airbus building the A350. When the 787 racked up impressive sales they resurrected the concept hoping newer engines would help.
As an aside all widebodies are selling poorly right now. Probably a good time to be shopping!

Sputnik 10-22-2019 10:45 AM

Thanks for the answer, interesting stuff

The leased ships are new, not used WOW birds.

They Were under contract from the lessor for WOW. With WOW’s demise the lessor was seeking a new lease holder quickly. Having them parked after completion would have been very expensive. As I mentioned I suspect we got a great deal. Very low demand for the A330-900.

The Ultrafan is 6ins larger diameter than the 7000, it will be a tight fit for sure.

Just lower the X wind limit by 1 kt and if anyone drags a pod just say rogue pilot error. Easy peasy.

Lifeisgood 11-01-2019 03:17 PM

From TG on the deliveries, as of Sep 2019

“The A330-900NEO is up and running. Due to delivery delays Delta scheduled the 330NEO to begin service July 15, 2019 instead of July 1.

As we were getting ready for the 15th it was determined that the jet would be ready before that date. Delta decided to enter service on July 10th. Our team (including many other Delta divisional teams) leapt into action to make the rollout a success.

Our 1st 330NEO entered service on the 10th and the second on the 11th. Another outstanding job by the Flight Ops team and all the other divisions that rose to the occasion and did so flawlessly. Two more 330NEO’s are slated for delivery this year.

2020 will be another busy year as we have been informed that Delta will take delivery of 7 A330-900 next year up from the 4 originally planned. 2021 delivery schedule is planned for 11 aircraft increased from 9.
The total order book for the -900 has increased to 37 from 35 through 2024.”
