ATL had issues with Approach/Departure a week or so ago. They had to drop the rate to something like 20 an hour while they did some sort of cleaning of the facility and basically had a skeleton crew keeping the place together while that occurred.

I was scheduled to fly into Florida when jax went atc zero. We took a like 4 hour delay. Multiple delays down range from inbounds that couldn't leave FL. We had one flight about 40nm outside of gnv that was forced to air return because they couldn't get handed off to jax center for the last portion of the leg.

The other piece that is little discussed is what to do when the center you are in goes down and you are IMC with # of other aircraft up there all comm out and no radar for at least a little bit. It may be that FAA at least tries to clear the sector just before shutting it down.. but if that’s been possible more often than not I don’t know.
I suspect it may be that it’s a bigger deal for smaller, slower airplanes down low in crowded airspace than airline traffic up in Class A. And as you mention the immediate answer is ground stop or restricting arrivals. Most of which you can see coming or at least wait out.
We had one crew that refiled themselves in the low sectors to get out from under the closure before resuming the route (VIP movers working hard there).

Also don’t have a clear answer on how much radar/radio overlap there is either, depends upon the location. But I’d imagine at some point it would just be too much for a small skeleton crew to manage.

Got stuck on a crew van with 11 of us and driver last night. Total BS. 3 to a bench for 30 minute ride with FA coughing. Driver was picking up crew that was late and added to ours. Not doing it again. They can wait for next van or Im getting out and calling Uber. Then expense it to company. It’s bs that the social distancing doesn’t apply to us.[/QUOTE]
You have to count on at least 1 out 3 Fa's on the crew van will be sick..

Wow, and I thought the drive to the airport in the morning was bad. 6, 2 pilots and 4 FAs. The van windows steamed up so you couldn't see out with us all breathing on each other. That 10 degree external air temperature makes you realize just how much moisture comes out of 7 sets of adult lungs in a confined 8 x 12 space.
