Headset/headphone advice
I am in the market for new headphones and have decided to upgrade from standard in-ear to noise cancelling over ear. I am debating between the Bose QC 35 and the Sony WH-1000XM3. They retail for about the same price but the Sony is rated higher.
I currently use a Telex 850 in the plane and it has worked great in everything I've flown. I will be displaced to the 737 (as of now) next year and I know it is a loud cockpit. My question comes down to buying the Sony and sticking with my Telex for the plane or going with the Bose and eventually get the Ufly mic for the plane. I appreciate the advice! |
On this topic (mostly), I’m going to the ER shortly. What’s the common practice for headsets and which one do you recommend on those airplanes?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk About 75% of the guys pre-covid were using ship's headsets (one ear DCs on most, TELEX on ex NWA planes and randoms) I was going to 73NA, so I bought a DC PRO-X. They came in right about the time the world went stupid. I've used them on the 2 ER 2 day trips I have flown since March. Not bad, I move the cup off the inside ear. Never got a chance to check the ANR with both ears on the RJ commute, as I had to drive to those trips. |
Thanks man. Hopefully we get some ORF-NYC RJs back before long.

I've flown with a couple guys now with the Sony's and really liked them with an Avee add on mic. The mic sounds really good so I've been considering them myself. The extra long boom option looks ideal (165mm).

Anecdotally, I feel like the Ufly mic itself introduces a lot of ambient noise into the hot mic on the 737. I much prefer flying with someone using the Bose A20, which seems to produce much less white noise and makes it a better experience for both pilots. I feel like the David Clark ANR headsets also produce excessive noise from the mic. I've never seen any data on this though...

I was using the WN-issued Telex 850, and bought the Bose QC25, waiting for the ‘Harmony’ product to be Fed certified (TSO’d?).
I must have waited 18-24 months without certification, so I elected to get the Bose A20. I am very pleased with the A20, although I can’t give a comparison to the QC25/UFly combo. I just didn’t want the hassle of a line check with the non-TSO’d headset. |
