The voluntary measures currently on the table just don’t move the needle enough. It’s with this reality that we unfortunately will move forward to furlough 1,941 pilots in October. Letters to pilots hired on or after July 17, 2017, will be sent out later this week.

“If prior to October we’re able to reach an agreement with your elected representatives to meaningfully spread the available flying among all our pilots at a reduced expense, we can further reduce or avoid those furloughs.”
Classy way to further turn the screws on the pilots that are going to be around the longest. How excruciating this process must be for the most junior of us. In my experience pilots have very long memories.
Am I processing this correctly that they took the VEOP and then cut staffing further?

called it last week, i knew JL would be back with a "if ALPA doesnt give us an ALV reduction we will furlough". This is managements playbook. Hold the line. They have done absolutely nothing to explore voluntary measures like they have constantly claimed they would.

On the bright side, the real negotiating is about to begin in earnest. About time.
