The 777 like the 757 is a great airplane but overbuilt for today's light weight competition. The capability to do 95% of the mission at a substantially reduced cost makes the 350 the obvious choice. It's all about regular efficiency not niche capability.

I thought they figured this out
LAX-SYD- they were able to use a closer alternate, may have to block seats but not as many
ATL-JNB- it will make a tech stop in CPT on its way back. Not sure if it will still be payload restricted but at least it will be a shorter flight departing from a sea level airport.
JFK-BOM- not scheduled to resume.
im unsure if ATL-PVG would be feasible on the 350, but I don’t think travel/capacity to China is gonna be a top priority for at least a couple of years
