Just add on... once at the gate, I have found the "seats left to be assigned" and "STBYS remaining" numbers to be relatively accurate and useful when determining how a flight looks "close in". If I see 3 seats remaining there and I'm #4 on the list, I start working on my Plan B.

Is there a company policy regarding a minimum time prior to departure until the gate agents are to start clearing nonrevs? One of my family members recently nonrev’d and in one instance it was about :30 prior, the next instance was after boarding was almost complete, the next instance was 1:00 prior to departure. Keep in mind all these flights had plenty of available seats.

I think some guide somewhere says to start clearing non revs at 15 til push, which doesn’t leave a lot of time. I think agents use their best judgment on how many open seats there are and how many non revs need to be cleared. I’ve seen it every which way. From 50 min prior to 10 min prior and they are closing the door behind us as we head down the jetway.
So expect variety, and stay close to the gate is the advice I give my family members.
