APD question

So, I dropped a horrible 5 day and used my APD. Never used one before. Intent was to pickup a trip in its place. Turns out I cannot pick up any trips in which APD is on that day, is that correct? If so, I just blocked myself from 5 days of work to make up for the 5 day I dropped. Is there any way around this or anything I can do to work on one or two of those days?

My issue was that reserve coverage was nearly non existent in that footprint so I could PD or swap with pot and APD was my only option. Can I green slip on an APD day?

This is a bummer and yet another lesson from HKU.

One day for five

I’m not certain what you can do now over that footprint.. but for the future (and for others) you only need to APD (or IVD) over one day - any day - of the footprint of the trip and it drops the whole thing.

so for example if you had a five day trip Jan 2-6 and put the APD on Jan 4.. you would be able to slip/pickup/swap into a rotation touching Jan 2-3 or 5-6 but not the 4th

You might be able to call scheduling and have them adjust your APD to only the first day of the trip.

In the future, you only need to us an APD over any day that touches the trip to drop the entire trip.

PWA 23.I.12
"A pilot will not be awarded a white slip, GS, GSWC, IA, IAWC, yellow slip, or swap for a rotation that is scheduled to operate on a day on which IVD or APD appears on his schedule."

If only I would read the contract, I wouldn’t pigeon hole myself like that. If I may complain, momentarily, why does the company care what I do on a day off? If it’s the only way to reconfigure my schedule, and I’m willing to fly on some of those days, it seems like it benefits all. But, as you can already tell from my original post, I don’t know much.

You sure it’s all 5 days? APD is max 4.

I have no idea why it was originally negotiated into the contract so this is purely speculation. I imagine it went something like, if we could have once a year where we could drop below min coverage to attend certain life events, that would be great. Okay, but what is to prevent them from GS over those days?

If I’m not mistaken (this preceded my time here), APD used to be paid.

Basically this is correct. The APD is intended to be used when you really need time off for something major. If allowed to use it and fly over those days the majority of the usage would probably be to pick up a greenslip. Dropping trips with low reserve coverage obviously has cost consequences to the company so like most things in the contract it’s a compromise.
