Inside Bill's Brain on Netflix (3rd episode) they show a new design nuclear reactor that uses spent nuclear fuel from older reactors. They're ready to build it now.

If anyone can go "full green" without nuclear power, it's Germany. They're smart, industrious, and wealthy. Very ambitious targets; jury still out on if they can totally eliminate coal, natural gas, and oil. But the trend is the "right" direction.

If anyone can build high-tech, lower risk, waste fuel eating nuclear reactors, it's China. Their massive in-country infrastructure projects are on a whole other level (high speed trains, massive cities, hydro electric dams, etc.).

As long as the rapidly de-industrializing world is sending it's manufacturing (and pollution) to China, why not root for China to find cleaner power to make all the things?

For the rest of the world, Generation III and Generation IV nuclear power plants are probably the best option for greening. Esp. if the electric autos come online in any significant numbers in a short timeframe.

(There's about a billion caveats to the above; that's just the general trend as I read it)

It may be China that builds new generation nuclear but it appears it's American technology and companies that are making it possible. No surprise there I guess.

Check out the relationship between Rare Earth metals, China, and the nuclear industry, you will be very angry.

Advancements in battery technology that reduce the weight of stored power may be around the corner. Lots of very smart people are working on this.

These battery breakthroughs show up constantly. Somehow they rarely seem to come anywhere close to the hype or even mass production capable. Often companies touting great new technologies are also seeking funding.

I hear we're only 10 years away (20, tops!) from fusion reactors that are going to power all those batteries.

Top genders are working on it.

TOP.

GENDERS.

(Just read "The Uninhabitable Earth - Life After Warming by David Wallace-Wells". There's some fear porn that will make you want to give up in total despair. Recommended reading for those who want to know why younger generations trend nihilist, read it and understand they are utterly steeped in this stuff. Big D is responding to that demand, well and good. If books like this are right, it's pretty much "game over" no matter what anyone does.)

We have been 10 years away from complete planetary death of all life for about 60 years now.....

And the military has been funding breakthrough technologies for batteries since before the German u-boats of WWI.
