All correct however it became a problem for the company. The solution was to not release pilots which is also contractually legal on the companies part. The result was a handful of pilots forced the companies hand to the detriment of all pilots. Actual example of why the company was not happy. 3 man trip with IOE scheduled. Day before trip junior FO swaps with another pilot who is now senior FO. Newly junior FO sees what happened and calls in sick to force senior FO who has done this before to him to fly crappy trip. Senior FO calls to ask why not released to be told junior FO is sick. Senior FO sick’s out next morning. TOE ends up cancelled for other reasons and both copilot positions end up being greenslips. Company pays 2 pilots at straight rates and two pilots at double pay. Company not happy.

Rumor was the CPO gave him a call and basically said what Big E outlined above. Said he was abusing the system and sick calls on the trips he targeted were through the roof. I agree it’s legal by the letter of the law, but like the post above says, it’s why we can’t have nice things. It’s why we can’t buy cakes in ICN anymore (9 FAs each carrying 2 free cakes out the door every morning was bound to attract attention) and a hundred other examples.
Sometimes it’s best to reward a good deal with moderation instead of taking it to the bleeding edge of what’s technically allowed because then it often goes away. Second hand knowledge on the CPO call btw so take it for what it’s worth.

We once stayed at a hotel in Zurich that provided us a fantastic free breakfast. Wonderful buffet filled with meats and cheeses ect. We would eat waiting for our rooms on arrival and the next day before departure. Then the flight attendants started showing up with Tupperware. Free breakfast no more!

In Icn, you get a stipend paid by Delta because you can't leave the hotel....like 63$ a day. They would eat breakfast for $14 and use the rest of the stipend (use or lose) and load up on anything they could buy. The stipend was in addition to their per diem
They were not using "their" money.....the cake could suck, but by God they were gonna get it because it was "free" for them

‘You could only “buy” certain cakes if you were going to bring them back to US. No cakes with fruit on them. I brought one back once. Wasn’t that good. Ended up throwing most of it out. No one in household really cared for it........not enough sugar in it! Side Note: Desserts in Asia ain’t that good....

However, I do like those little fish shaped waffle like things with the sweet bean paste filling. Yum. Eat those all the time.
Another tasty treat are the squid ink colored cakes with the custard filling. Those are really good. You can get them all over Japan.

Oh....agree 100%....but the blandness didn't stop them because it was .........FREE!!! Many people lose all restraint when they don't have to pay.
