NYC transportation advice

If you want a quick escape from the Airport and a cheaper UBER from JFK, take the Airtrain to Howard Beach, get off at Lefferts Blvd.
Lefferts is a free exit. My crash pad was in Ozone park off Lefferts, while not as much to do while hanging out as Kew Gardens, there was a grocer, pizza, chinese, subway, etc close by. (5 min walk or less)
I was on the 7ER so it was pretty nice for me, free air train to crash pad, and if I had to go to LGA, just UBER.
Downside, for a EWR callout, LIRR is hard to get to from there, so I'd just take the normal subway.
ER did very little EWR flying on reserve, as guys who live over there would usually snap it up.

I used KEW cab. Mostly good experiences. 18 is the fare for up to 4 people if you stop at the same terminal on arrival. If as mentioned you share with flight attendants just pay for it. You can also take a yellow cab for about 30. Be aware that if it is raining the cabs tend to disappear into the city and can be scarce.

^Switched to voyager a couple years ago and haven’t looked back. Cars are of decent quality and friendly drivers. They’re fairly accurate on the time quoted, much more so than Kew.
Don’t forget about the NEPP for those of you without company parking. Reimbursable $200/mo towards transportation to/from EWR/LGA rotations.

Kew and Voyager are not the same. I’ve been in a S500 Mercedes quite a few times the last month. I haven’t been in a Kew car in over 2 years. Never again. The only thing you gain with Uber is possibly a quicker pickup and no multi terminal stop. But almost triple the price.

My apologies. I thought I’d used Voyager but perhaps it was all Kew. Swore off Kew after the above story. Will try Voyager.

I never knew there were other options until I was shown Voyager. Don’t **** off the owner though. He has a do not answer list because some have screwed the drivers by calling for rides and then jumping in something else.

My first rule of NYC was spend a few bucks to make the experience better. Grand scheme of things it doesn’t move the needle and will be the difference between an awesome experience in your life vs a dreaded grind. Most of the griping you hear comes from the penny-pinchers that couldn’t let go and enjoy it. Nothing better than running the loop in Central Park before going to work.
NYC is what you make of it. A couple thoughts:
JFK-LGA or vice versa - Uber or taxi. I’ve done the bag drag on the bus/train and it’s just not worth it. If you NEED to save that extra $10 I’d suggest looking elsewhere in the budget. Do yourself a favor and don’t “split” a cab with 5 FA’s. If you do, just pay for the cab. Nothing worse than seeing a WB captain squabbling over $3 with a bunch of flight attendants.
JFK-EWR - as the previous poster said this is pretty easy. Airtrain-Jamaica-LIRR-Penn-NJ Transit-EWR Airtrain. Always LIRR. You can take the subway (E?) but may get stuck on the local and spend half your day stopping all the way to Manhattan - guilty! Yes it’s a bit of a grind and not exactly cheap. But I’ve also tried ubering it and spent a small fortune and a couple hours gridlocked in Brooklyn. It’s just not a quick trip.
My preferred way to do an early-ish EWR was to get a hotel near Penn and enjoy the city the night prior (vs a parking lot near EWR). Get up like a reverse commuter and take the train to EWR. Surprisingly you can find really good deals on nice hotels in Manhattan the day of; almost always cheaper than near the airports. EWR has the cheapest hotels, followed by JFK and then LGA (usually.)
Download the Priceline app and become adept at filtering ratty hotels. I think my limit was 3.5 stars or better. There’s a nasty Ramada in flushing that has/had 3 stars (and no hot water) which I think is how I came to that.
Go in with a little adventure in your outlook and it’s a hell of a good time. Best flying, crews and experience in the system.
