Good news first, Delta owns a Refinery that's raking in cash right now.

airfares are still below pre-pandemic prices, and remained steady in 2021, fares jumped more than 18% in April
Fares up more than 18% in April explains the big drop off in bookings in April. I just can’t see how the big 4 can be profitable with oil this high, airfares below pre-pandemic levels, and forward bookings dropping off substantially in April.

Hack journalism.
The article started with a picture of an AA MD88. They really couldn’t get something from the last 5 years?
It stated that jet fuel prices are the highest ever without using a source or numbers, it turns out they aren’t (see 2012-2013). Finally, multiple airlines have stated that PRASM has recovered, so again I’m not sure what the article means by “air fare” but without any source or quantifying any of their statements, it’s just pure sensationalism.

Remember how past CEO's were concerned about saving fuel? Don't run the APU till 10 prior to push, APU sheriff, groundcrews hooked air up immediately, run published cost index and not higher. Now Ed seems like he could care less about saving fuel.

I’m sure he cares - it’s an expense that can be reduced. But focus on fuel savings is a luxury that our imploding operation can’t afford to prioritize. We’re just trying to keep our heads above water right now, and until they finally realize they need to pull some flying down it’s only going to get worse. Cool cabins for boarding for all my friends, thank goodness!
