So supposedly the current uniform is based on a Naval officers uniform. I looked this up.

https://www.mynavyhr.navy.mil/References/US-Navy-Uniforms/Uniform-Regulations/Chapter-3/Male-Officer/

The “Service Dress” uniform appears closest to what we wear, so I’m guessing that its the model for ours. As to when it’s to be worn I found this;

May be prescribed for wear year-round to all official functions when Formal Dress, Dinner Dress or Full Dress Uniforms are not prescribed and civilian equivalent dress is coat and tie.”

The “Service Uniform” wear guidelines are as such;

”Worn in Summer/Winter for office work, watchstanding, liberty, or business ashore when prescribed as uniform of the day.”

Would our time at work (watchstanding?) not seem to fit the latter set of guidelines better? Is the service dress uniform worn on say the bridge of a destroyer or in the CIC of a submarine?
I’m not former navy so I’m asking the question of those that were.

Since we are talking about US Navy uniforms and jackets....

A Cut Above has a couple good looking jackets, one light, one heavy that I think look pretty professional. I'd even wear my hat with these.

That is the worst look EVER as an airline pilot. Second place isn’t even close to how bad that is.

No where, and I mean no where, in the business world is a double-breasted jacket the symbol of professionalism. No one who wears a business suit in a professional setting, from CEOs to senior managers to salespeople to anyone else, chooses a double breasted jacket. I’ve never seen Ed or JL in a double breasted jacket. I’m not sure what the dress code is on the 4th floor, but I can bet that every person on that floor who is wearing a jacket is going single breasted, even flight ops guys who are not in the pilot uniform. A well-fitted, tailored single breasted jacket is the professional norm. We are following some norm that was in place when legal segregation was still a thing. Time to update to todays vision of a professional look.

That’s great, but for the third time, we don’t wear suits to work, we wear a uniform.

Watchstanding in the form of OOD (Officer of the Day) or anywhere outwardly presentable to the general public. So if the Destroyer was docked and public interaction was involved, then SDB (Service Dress Blues) would be the norm. Underway when only ships company is involved then no.

Can I still wear my Costco pants and paper thing shirts I buy in the pilot lounge uniform shop?

Whatever we go with, I hope there are options other than the Delta uniform store. After that online storefront opened, I ordered a few things and promptly returned them. The quality of both fit and fabric were atrocious.

Is our uniform any more uncomfortable than an AF uniform - no. So why not look better? If I was king I would keep the current winter uniform and go with an open collar summer uniform. It would look better and be more comfortable. But hey I must be a manager.
Sort of like the “new” Air Force service dress (or all the iterations of ABUs). Everytime an organization tries to update or modernize an iconic uniform, it turns into a total sh!tshow with everyone being unhappy and several more versions of the “new” uniform resulting in focus shifting from the actual mission to “uniforms.”

Our uniform looks good and doesn’t need fixing or changes.

I agree that a light weight shell would be nice for the flight deck and/or warmer months that we don’t wear the horse blanket. Referencing the ire of the f/a uniform changes (and the same quagmire of Air Force uniforms), we are wasting energy and resources on a “new” Delta pilot uniform. Leave good enough alone. Otherwise, what’s the point?! Delta polos and khakis (or flightsuits) might as well be the uniform. We could be the “Best Buy of the skies.”
