“If you’re not paying for it, you’re the product.”

I see the fine print requires SkyMiles frequent fliers membership; tie the device in use to the SM account, I guess.

The TOS might be interesting to read.

(No one will)

It's called a "discussion forum" where people discuss things. Not sure the point of your pointless comment.

I always use a VPN when on public wifi just for this reason.

JetPilotDaddy 01-08-2023 01:25 PM

I'll break it down from what I've heard from others:

Waaaaa, I can't scroll Instagram/Trashbook/troll on APC/text my 3rd wife from the flight deck (did I cover all generations?) because they can track me by FFN vs all the T-Mobile numbers they use.

Honestly, no more wifi at rest issues

What did you want to discuss about your linked article? Did you have thoughts about this? I must have missed them.

Hopefully the weather viewer won't freeze up half the time now.

Ok so where is your discussion?

As a customer who always buys the wifi, I think this will slow down the wifi even more. Sigh...

PilotWombat 01-08-2023 10:02 PM

Supposedly they didn't roll this out before because the bandwidth wasn't high enough for a satisfactory customer experience. Apparently they think they have the bandwidth now.

I hope they've programmed it to allowed company computers to have priority, because even with whatever blockers they have, half the flight will be streaming Netflix. Life...uh...finds a way.

Trip7 01-09-2023 04:04 AM

Viasat is about to launch the 1st of 3 of their 3rd Generation Satellites in late March. All 3 will provide fast, high bandwidth internet globally. There might be bandwidth issues before the launch but should significantly improve as the Satellites launch.

My understanding is that gogo was the main limiting factor. That technology just didn’t support the bandwidth necessary to have functional free Wi-Fi. They didn’t want to start the process until they had enough of the fleet converted to viasat so that customers wouldn’t have the Wi-Fi on half their flights become essentially unusable. My experience with the viasat since they turned on the trial has been somewhat limited, but I haven’t noticed any issues yet. Nothing like the RJ gogo which is basically useless.

200 people using on board WIFI would bog it down so bad I don't think you could get much of anything done, no? Is the WIFI that good now on planes?

I saw a post on a FB page of a guy saying he saw someone playing World of Warcraft on a free wifi trial flight. Must be ok for that knowing you must be constantly connected. Though if everyone is doing it, no idea on the bandwidth limits

JetBlue has had free fast internet for years via Viasat and no issues. I’ve streamed YouTube TV in the back of their planes. The precedent has already been set

m3113n1a1 01-10-2023 06:24 AM

The viasat internet is pretty fast. I've streamed stuff on our airplanes and it's been better than hotel internet. Pretty sure our IT people understand bandwidth sufficiently.

I watched a whole movie on Netflix on a DH the other day and never even glitched/froze up once, actually worked better than the onboard IFE does half the time.

Or you could read a book.

Speed Select 01-10-2023 07:19 AM

What happened to looking out the window and tracing your way across the country on highways and cities?

Or just working out life in your mind with some free thinking time (what we now call “mindfulness”)?

That's what I did in college. It's boring AF. Also, put your window shade down, weirdo. It's 7am.

I doubt it’s “none” but I did not know. Was there a bulletin I missed?

I don’t see the harm in this post. If it were truly pointless, there would not be three pages of response!

B6 has had fleet wide and for free the WiFi product Delta is rolling out for about 5 years now. It's not slow, even with a fairly high take rate.

DL to give free wifi for all pax

One of my pet peeves.
DL to include WiFi should have been the caption.
There’s no such thing as free shipping either, it’s ‘shipping included’.
You’re paying for it buddy.
How many of you buy >$200 because shipping is FREE?
Because it sounds soooo much better then a 5% discount if you spend more then $200.

You are giving our IT people WAY too much credit. Have you logged into ANY of our stuff?

It's not the IT people, it's the Product Development people.

This is almost entirely outsourced, so it actually works.

Agree, the OP referenced our IT people though…..

I'm not saying we have the premiere IT department but if we were all given DC-8s to fly, our ish would be broke all the time too

Who are these "it" people? Are you all playing a company wide game of tag?

I have never been able to figure out what AI is. We have not been able to figure out real intelligence. How are we going to figure out artificial?
