I've been carrying my own insulated tumbler for years. It's one way to improve an already bad coffee experience. I also like the option of having a drink container with both ice and 12oz of liquid.
The real statement of environmental stewardship vs cost cutting would be if Delta provided reusable pilot cups. Otherwise this is just a cost shifting measure like reduced NYC layovers.

It’s because you old farts can’t be trusted not to spill all over the console and shut down the engines. Then you need a “no spill zone” Airbus chart to help you out with common sense. Not directed at you JB…and I used old farts liberally to apply more to seniority not age.

They said to read the article because the article states that they have sourced “tight fitting lids to avoid spills” (paraphrased because I’m not gonna look it up for exactness). So your concern for lidless cups was covered in the article that advised of the change.
