New COO
Looks like they’re finally realizing there needs to be a leadership shake up?
I wonder how long JL sticks around in his neutered role. |

COO with zero airline experience. What could go wrong? I hope he's a a fast learner, but he was a marine, so....

Say you need to form the board for your new airline. The best qualified people happen to be all the talking heads over on chit chat. They have a ton of airline experience, seasoned pilots, some advanced business degrees. All have extensive leadership experience and have commanded and made decisions for large groups. Technically, they are the best qualified individuals for the job. However, wouldn’t you agree that there is some value to include people on your board who, while not technically the most qualified, bring an outside perspective that may prove useful to leading your new endeavor? Or would you be happy with stacking your team with only “best-qualified” chit chat people. |

Great show. That’s probably the best character pair on that show.

I'm more worried about having a Field Artillery officer in an Aviation leadership position. Having ground pounders in charge of pilots never turned out good for us.
"Those guys can ONLY fly how much?" "They get how many hours of rest?" Hopefully he doesn't come in here like a brand new LT with new-idea-fairy energy and try to crank the optimizer from ludicrous speed to plaid |

I say give the man a chance and let's see how it goes. I really hope our new COO does well, but it does seem to be a trend over the past several years to hire people with less and less airline operational experience in positions that really should have some. |

When was the last time a Bastian hire in flight ops panned out?
I guess John Laughter's job just got diluted. oh, well. I'm sure the new guy's lessons learned from bottling soda pop will translate brilliantly to the challenges of running a global airline. |
I think the real big news here is that this is a shot across the bow at Coca-Cola. Can’t believe they hired a Pepsi guy to work in the Delta/Coke Mecca.

Coke is so much more popular than Pepsi there’s a recurring internet theory that Pepsi created it’s restaurant division in the 70’s & 80’s (Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, KFC and others) because it was the only way they could get their less popular fizz sugar water to be sold at all. Since all our fortunes are tied together, I wish him well. |

Surprised no one has commented on how he was a Pepsi guy for 25 years and is now in a famously Coke town. [edit: intercept beat me to it]

During the early successful years some of the board was Coke guys. (Interlocking Directorites) Maybe they are on to something.

Bastian used to work at Pepsi.
New COO’s first job, Marine Artillery: send stuff down range, on time, on target. Last job: give people a ride and have them leave with a smile on their face. I don’t folks, boxes are being checked! |
