Also what makes it fun is the diversity from narrow body to wide body to domestic to international. Lots to look forward to, not just getting in the right seat of a narrow body and the only thing to look forward to is upgrade on the same aircraft.

If you don't mind a small piece of advice from an old dog, don't give up the Guard or Reserves. One: small protection from possible furlough. Two: Continues to be a great way to network. Three: What I thought was going to be beer money from the reserves at age 60 has now turned into a major part of my retirememt (Tricare and money). It can be a pain to bid around reserve weekends, but in the end, worth it, IMHO.

Skyone,
Thanks for the words of wisdom. I don't plan on getting out of the Guard anytime soon. I just went over 12 years service(3.5 enlisted/8.5 commissioned all at the same Guard base). Plus, I just found out I am on the Feb list for Major. I should pin on in June. Also, my Guard unit sent me to UPT so I have pretty high level of loyalty to them. I am going to have to step down as the Chief of Tactics but that's fine by me. All my unit's leadership, which one is a Delta dude, is pretty much all airline dudes so they are all in the same boat. They have all been great mentors.

Your situation, earlier retirement, sounds similiar to my Dad's. He punched early from AA when they started talking about taking retirements. His accountant told him "The only thing you have to gain by working to 60 is leaving more money for your kids when you die". He talked to his CP a few days later and told him "I have flown for 35 years (USAF/AA) without bending any metal and I just assume keep it that way. I'm retired." It cracked me up when he told me this. So, now he is retired and moved to a golf course about 15 minutes from me and he hates golf. My Mom is the golfer. He won't sit still though. He mountain bikes, waterskis competetively, goes hiking, goes rowing, and yes, golfs (but not with Mom). Mom is a stickler for the rules and Dad likes to use a "foot wedge" from behind the tree while having a beer. :)

I'm excited to hear all of the cheerleading this week. It's pretty exciting post emergence.

Congrats on getting hired, and welcome aboard!

I think commuting into or out of CVG sucks no matter where you're going. Atlanta has more mainline service, so it's probably an easier commute. There are alot of employees going back and forth for training, however, and they will have priority over you.

Frequently, getting to JFK involves flying to LGA and catching a cab across town. Usually, other guys are doing the same thing, so you can share the cost of a cab. As an MD88 guy, you'll have 3 airports to cover, which may complicate the situation.

Commuting on RJs can be challenging. They are frequently either full, weight limited, or running behind schedule (crew shortages?). CVG-ATL has six flights per day (1 or 2 of them are RJs). CVG-JFK has 4 flights (3 RJs), and CVG-LGA has 7 flights (4 RJs).

Overall, though, you'll get seniority more quickly in New York, and that may make commuting easier, and gives you better QOL.

LOBO 05-12-2007 12:14 PM

Did Delta say how long traing was?

BubbleEyes2 05-12-2007 01:09 PM

CVG767A, thanks for the welcome! I did not know that the 88 JFK base meant a 3 airport coverage.

Lobo, as far as length of training, I've been given a lot of information, some of which I can't make heads or tails of. Like sim codes. But as far as I can put it all together, we've got 10 days of indoc, so I assume that's the next 10 business days. Then I have a hodgepodge of training starting with FMS on Jun 14, and sim through July 17 or 19 (I'd have to look it up again). So as best as I can figure, I'll have a break of between 2 and 3 weeks when I'll be studying (distance learning cds etc) but wherever I want. Anyway, this is just what I've put together from emails and letters, and not having actually been to class yet, so ......

LOBO 05-12-2007 04:34 PM

Thanks for the info. That's more then what I knew previously

All,

I start DAL training 4 Jun. (Been lurking this thread for a couple days now.) I was just wondering ref the above...REALLY!?!?! You haven't even shown up for class yet and you got your assignment??!! Wow...even the USAF gives you the illusion that it's kind of a "collaborative effort." :p I guess I'll have to keep an eye on the old mailbox the next couple of weeks. Congrats to you and I'll probably be seeing you at the training center in a bit.

Man!!! I hope I'm fortunate enough to wind up in ATL soon. Commuting to anywhere from where I live via the airlines would be a pill. (I'm in the reserves - "semi-close drive" to ATL.)

See ya!!

WhyFlare 05-13-2007 10:39 AM

What background were the others you interviewed with? Any non military guys?

BubbleEyes2 05-13-2007 11:33 AM

Hawgdude,

yeah, it floored me too. Now, that's not to say that it's final, and not subject to change. All I know is what the letter tells me. We may know more tomorrow. Congrats on the date!

flying_wendell 05-13-2007 04:43 PM

Interview prep??

Just got an email on Friday and will be calling tomorrow to schedule the interview. So it's time to step up the preparation, so...

Those of you who have interviewed, what did you do to prepare for the interview? I've read the gouge info. on WFFF, Airline Interviews, etc. Lots of good stuff there and on this thread. As a summary from what I have seen on the gouges, these seem to be the most recommended sources to study:

1. Mental Math for Pilots
2. Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators
3. Checklist for Success
4. FAR/AIM
5. ATP/FE Writtens

Some of those sources are pretty all encompassing and lengthy. Any areas of particular emphasis that will definitely be seen at the interview?
Is there anything else you would recommend particularly in regard to the written testing?

Thanks.

For me, there were five of us (four dudes and one dudette) the day I interviewed. Two were Military only, two were civilian only, and one was both, Guard & Regional dude. So by my interview group, I would call it a 50/50 split, civ vs. mil backgrounds. Three of us got conditional jobs. Without trying to embrass anyone, one mil dude and one civ dude did not get the job offer. (Please use that info constructively.) So your flying background really does not matter as long as you are qualified. FWIW, what helps is if you have a solid internal rec or go to an AIR INC Job Fair to get your foot in the door.

Guard Dude 05-13-2007 06:40 PM

Dumb question

BubbleEyes2/HawgDude,
How long was it from the time you interviewed to the time Delta called with a training date?

Thanks in advance!

Guard Dude

HawgDude 05-13-2007 06:55 PM

Guard Dude,

It took one month to the day to get the call. Of note, I got tired of waiting (OK...maybe nervous is a better word:o ) and called the recruiting office "just to check on my status." I was told I was so far good to go. I got called by the scheduler later that same night offering me a class date. I TOTALLY doubt that the two are related, but....who knows for sure. At least in my case, giving them a jingle certainly didn't hurt things.

WhyFlare,

There were some reserve mil types, a couple of retired mil types, and a couple of civilian guys. Pretty much an even split.

FW, I go in Tuesday! I have all those books you mentioned and have been comparing the gouge to the books just to hit on certain subjects!
I have a phone call to make tomorrow for some more info - I'll let you know how it goes. - BCD

BubbleEyes2 05-14-2007 05:12 PM

Guard Dude,

It was about a month and a half before I got the call. But I was told at the interview if you really can't bear the wait (they said if you don't hear anything, that's a good thing), you can call to check on your status. I waited about 2 weeks, then caved and called to make sure I was "cleared to train." They gave me about 3 weeks notice for the actual date.

It's sort of a strange process, being congratulated on interview day with so many conditions yet to be checked off. And if you're like me, you just want the certainty. Good luck to all.

BTW, first day today. Nothing earth shattering that hasn't already been out there. Just a lot of encouragement and welcoming - a very nice way to spend a day.

Guard Dude 05-14-2007 06:51 PM

BubbleEyes2/HawgDude,
Thanks for the heads up! Yeah, I only made it 2 weeks and 3 days before I called.

Thanks again,

Well, I didn't get the job. 8 of us went in on Tuesaday and by the time I was notified 1 was invited back for day two and another was not. I'm not sure about the other 5. 2 with military background and 6 without I believe. I will make this short and say the gouge is very accurate, what is most important is the 3 on 1 interview - know your own leadership and management styles and know your conflict resolution methods. I guess I didn't! Have Fun - I'll check back later to hear how the rest of you did! - BCD

flying_wendell 05-17-2007 02:34 AM

BCDurbin,

Sorry to hear you didn't get the job. Thanks for the interview feedback!

acl65pilot 05-17-2007 03:03 AM

The took six out of eight got it on Tuesday.
I will second the fact that you must know how you manage your flight deck and what you do with someone who is not playing well in the sand box. It is a straight forward interview. They are looking for good strong leaders that know their place. The are not looking for you to reinvent the wheel.
FWIW there are a lot more classes planned for the remainder of 07 and in to 08. The numbers will increase sharply in July and do not look for them to fall of anytime soon.
For anyone that has gotten hired, Congrats, you are getting in at a really good time. There will be a lot of people behind you later this year.

tankerpuke 05-18-2007 06:48 AM

Have any newhires bid for and received SLC? Projections for holding SLC (any type)?

Guard Dude - if you don't mind I have some specific questions for a fellow Guardsmen. If you get a chance, please email me at [email protected].

Much thanks!

For those that recently interviewed with Delta...

Are the technical questions asked face to face in the interview or are they on a test (written/computer-based)

Also has anyone seen any additional gouge on HOW to answer certain questions (i.e. someone saw the CA drinking, CA didnt follow noise abatment procedures, etc etc) I imagine they are looking for a certain answer...

The technical questions are only asked on the computer (42 questions 42 mins) all multiple choice - the gouge is accurate.

Those particular questions were not asked of me, but they are looking for certain answers - but I don't know what they are!! More important is your leadership, management and conflict resolution abilities. Good Luck - which you will hear many times that day!! - BCD

Caesar 05-20-2007 05:52 PM

Does anyone know if seniority starts from when you're hired or when you start your class-date?

JSP,
Check out the post I submitted at the bottom of the first page of this thread, "Back from Atlanta". It's a small novel but I mentioned the websites I used. Good luck dude!!!

You first day of class. Based on the last four of your ssn. 0000 the most senior and 9999 the plug.
All benefits start day one. Medical, Flight, etc. It may take a week or so to get the wife and kiddos added, but you are covered.

Hornet1 05-24-2007 04:45 AM

I just got the call yesterday for a class date. They offered me the 18th of June but I'm not available untill July. So I took the July 16th date. Sounds like they have two classes per month for at least the next few months.

For those of you that have started, what has the domicile breakdown been? All Atl and NYC?

Rhino Driver 05-24-2007 06:14 AM

Congrats Hornet and to everyone else. I put my app in towards the end of MAR and I only had one internal rec. Having not heard anything for 2 months, I decided last minute to attend the AIR Inc Job Fair in ATL this past weekend. THANKS ARJMJJ! That was golden gouge. I received the email invite to interview 2 days later and will be going to ATL in a few weeks. Everyone who has been posting on this thread has given some excellent advice and I thank you all. Guard Dude thanks for kicking this thing off! Good Luck!

Hornet1, are you an east or west coast guy?

acl65pilot 05-24-2007 08:59 AM

With the AE just posted. It looks like you could get ATL on the 88-73 and 67ER. They do not have the 767 program up and running yet, but you will probably see new hires going to it by the end of summer.
Basically you will have a lot of options here.

Do you know how the 767ERs out of ATL will be used? Is it all intl or domestic or both??

tantrum 05-24-2007 06:16 PM

congrats. The brother of a friend of mine will be in your class. I think you guys may well be able to get anything from the 88 to the 7ER. You'll love it here. Welcome!

DAL4EVER 05-25-2007 06:05 AM

TipTip35,

The 767ER is nothing but international - Heavy Europe, all Africa and most South America flying. There are rumors that the ER will take over the Hawiian flying from the 767-400 which is considered a different category. They are getting the first of 13 (I believe) 757ER's later this summer that will be used on short haul transatlantic flights (JFK/BOS - West Coast european cities). The 767 domestic includes all 757/767 domestic and carribean and central american flying. There are unbid openings in the latest bid totalling nearly 100 FO positions on the 757/767 domestic and ER categories.

As far as gouge goes on the situational questions, just be yourself. If you excercise good critical decision making and command leadership skills you'll have no problem. There are not necessarily right or wrong answers. They just want to see how you process the scenario. For those wanting canned gouge answers - beware. The interviewers know the gouge info on the internet as well as prep services and will spot that a mile away. It can usually kill the interview because then they question if you can actually handle various scenarios that will inevitably come up on the line.

Good luck.

Flare Armed 05-25-2007 06:15 AM

That Atlanta 767ER category is already doing some Hawaii flying via SLC. If you want to fly widebodies internationally, there is plenty of that to be done at this company.

Now if we could just get them to pay us better for doing it. :)

I interviewed on May 2...Actually must have met you that day. I was sitting near elevators when the three of you from previous day were there taking your MMPIs. 6 out of 8 got the offer the day I interviewed. I'm assuming if I don't get a call real soon it looks more like the July 2nd class for me.
