The bottom line is that it's not particularly important to understand WHY Delta hires military pilots. You're either a military pilot, or you're not. So work with the cards you were dealt.

Then you get hired.

The question is whether you'll be a good Delta pilot. A douche-bag with a great résumé... is still an a douche-bag. I've flown with a lot of great people with all sorts of backgrounds, and I think it's got a lot more to do with who they consciously decide to be today, than anything else.
Absolutely agree! No problem here. I know a few d-bags that are former military and a few civilian guys. Douchey goes around.

Not true. Very talented mil pilot this summer hooked his maneuvers Val. To my knowledge, no further issues afterwards. I'm sure there are others with a stumble here or there from a walks of life. Everybody has a bad day once in a while. Some times it's a day that counts.

Every pilot has their own personal priorities when it comes to the money/QOL matrix. I can understand and respect the decision each pilot makes with regard to their family life. Personally, count me in the crowd where the wife would say "Have a great trip!" if I'm offered a 33k GS.

True, but keep it in perspective. He's a senior 76 CA. You'll probably never see that. Sounds good but its like striking gold. I'm a fairly senior narrowbody FO. I get greenslips and they normally are built around me DHing to some city across the nation and bringing the jet back. Scheduling does an amazing job of slicing and dicing a 4 day trip with reserves, white slips and, the occassional, green slip. Getting an entire trip, unless you're in an international wide body is not going to happen on a regular (if ever) basis.

Take away: take 'em when you can but don't let it rule your life. If you get a $30K payday in lieu of a vacation, hell yeah? But that's like meeting a hot young groups of twins and their mom on a layover....not gonna happen.

I hope you're right...

I'll be applying in a year and a half or so, and the last 4 of my SSN starts in the VERY high 9s. It's strange that someone's SSN can impact their QOL the way that it can.

2014 new hire estimate – 880.
340 approved in 2015 (Jan –Apr) but we currently plan on hiring indefinitely. That is 4 months at 85/month so if we bump up hiring those numbers will probably change.
2014 hires – 51% civilian/ 37% military/ 12% combination of both.

Scoop

This is what they crew resources folks have been saying at the base meetings. Specifically, they have approval to hire 85/month. They feel they need 115/month to fly the planned 2015 schedule, but have not yet received approval for that.

I want to work for Delta, however, I would really like to work for Delta within the next 5 years. Having said that, I would like to hear some opinions on the value of a master's degree, particularly if your undergraduate GPA wasn't all that impressive. I have just under a 3.00 from an online aviation university and I was just wondering if I'll be bypassed because of my low grades? Would a masters degree offset that? Or would TPIC time and letters of recommendation from current DAL pilots carry more weight? Like I said, I really want to work for Delta and if a masters might help, I'm willing to do it.

Slight correction Buzz... I'm a "just above the middle" (in category) 76 CA... but I do know how to work the system.
