Is it not simply logical that an ever-aging population of pilots, pushed to the extremes by our work rules would have more sick leave usage?
Seems like an intuitive assessment. Has anyone looked at the ALV trend? How about the effects of rotation construction under FAR 117? If you work an older population harder, they tend to become ill easier and more frequently.

As for the spike in May....well...don't replenish a use/lose sick leave program for 12,500+ pilots on the same day. Use their hire date as the basis for replenishment. That will dampen the May spike.

And if our monthly schedule averages 10% more hours, our sick usage should increase respectively. I used to call in sick for a 3-4 day trip, now when I do it's a 4-5 day. Even if I'm not sick more, I use more sick hours.

Exactly, my trips average about 7 days. One sick call could wipe out an 11 day trip.

Going to domestic 5-days added some sick time in. We used to all call in sick for 3 and 4 day trips, now we call in sick for 4 and 5 day trips.

FAR 117 allowing them to back up trips which gives PBS the ability to build guys 14 days of domestic flying in a row will make anybody sick.

The rise in sick leave is not because we just decided to "abuse" what we have. The unintended consequence of squeezing everything they can out of us is that we get sick more often.

Anyone who is flying the line knows this....anyone on the 4th floor or any ALPA lifer who never flies the line will not get this. When was the last time an ALPA guy or a 4th floor type flew a domestic 5-day backed up by a 4-day?

I'm not willing to give an inch on sick leave....IT IS NOT OUR PROBLEM! You want to work us more.....we get sick more. Work that into your budgets and shut the hell up about sick leave abuse.
