Salt Lake City Neighborhoods
So what's the "Peachtree City" of Salt Lake? (i.e. where are some popular places for SLC-based Delta pilots to live?)

Park City is beautiful. It's also very pricey compared to many of the surrounding areas, most people in PC seem to be in Condos on or near ski resorts.
It's all about what you're looking for. If you'd rather live in a larger house on a little property, there are many options in the area. Mountain Green, Morgan, and Heber are all fairly popular in that niche. They are quiet, small-town environments. If you want a more urban cultural, or social environment, a lot of people like the nicer downtown neighborhoods of Salt Lake. The Avenues, and Sugarhouse come to mind. They are also a bit more expensive and smaller houses. If you are not of the predominant, local faith, Park city and downtown may provide a more familiar social environment than many of the suburbs where neighborhoods are often categorized (and dominated) by the local LDS ward (congregation). It's a great place to live and an awesome base. I think it may have some of the best real estate value in the country. |
It really depends on what you are looking for in a community. Park City is trendy and cultural, SLC downtown is "big city" feel, and you can live on a farm and be within 30 minutes of the airport. Lots of options and great areas. Houses are typically on the larger size due to the size of the families that live in Utah.
On another note..... How difficult is it to live in SLC and be based out of another city? I've looked at all the flights to LAX, SFO, DEN, OAK, LAS, etc. Just not sure how easy it is to jump seat in and out at least until SLC becomes home base. |

The condos down near Kimball Junction are way overpriced IMHO. There are some good deals in Jeremy Ranch as well, it's just a bit farther to get to the slopes is all. Being in PC gets you out of the winter time smog of SLC, as well as the summer heat. 35 minutes to the parking lot at SLC. And less than 50% Mormon. What's not to love? TP |

True that it has gotten pricey. Silver Springs is still pretty good value for the money. Large lots, mine is 0.4 acres. You can find places under $300 sq.ft.. Compare that to Sun Peak just across the street and up the hill and there are tiny lots with houses going for over $500 sq.ft.

If you're going to live in Park City, just plan on spending more on your house, your groceries, and *especially* your mountain bike (I hear high end bikes are mandatory up there.)

Avoid "Park Angeles." It's not the same city it was when I grew up there. A lot more crowded and expensive. Look at Heber and Midway. Both those areas are beautiful, and you're 45 mins from SLC. Check out South Ogden too.

Try Sugarhouse. I've lived here now for 6 years. Great place for kids. Lots to do

If you don't mind a drive of about 1.5 hours, look North in Cache Valley. Logan area is a cool college town and the prices there are way less than anywhere in the Salt Lake Valley and probably half of what you will pay in Park City, Heber or Morgan areas.

I lived in Logan too. Great place. A bit far of a drive in the winter. But you gotta love the Beaver.

Take a look at Suncrest down in Draper. On the top of South Mountain, incredible views, above the inversion, great lifestyle yet close to everything. Mountain top restaurant and Rec Center with outdoor pool. Lotta DL and SKW families. Good schools..close to Juan Diego Catholic HS, Channing Hall IB Charter, Summit Charter, and Draper/Alpine PS system. Will have to drive the kids down on the Draper side cause the road gradient is too steep for school busses..Alpine side OK. Homes range from 200k townhouse to 1.5 M estates..most in 350 to 500K range. SLC is the best base in the system..and that's why it's so senior! Good Luck..

The city of Salt Lake is under 50% Mormon population and has been for a long time. The worse thing about Slc besides the drinking laws are the schools. Park City, Alpine including Suncrest depending on which side, and Kaysville have the best schools. Otherwise you'll see 5 or 6's on great schools, if that is your sort of thing. Slc is growing like crazy and is a great town. It's come a long way since I've left. The inversion and winters can suck but that makes skiing an easier choice. My parents had one of the first houses on Suncrest and winters are brutal. Plus driving up and down the hill sucks. If you decide to go that route check the foundations. There were multiple lawsuits against the developers and builders. Park City is awesome but the amount of money to buy is crazy. I would look at Heber, Oakley, and surrounding communities.
Maybe I'm missing the joke but what is Park Angeles? |
