If you are in Rome (FCO) trying to get back to the states and the loads are not good from FCO, but are good in Amsterdam (AMS) what are the options to get from FCO to AMS if traveling with the wife?

What is a realistic time in between arriving and departing AMS or CDG.

Short of buying a ticket what codeshare/JVs provide the best option? I guess we could always go to the ZED site and see the available options but how do you check the loads?

Is the train an option if you have a day?

Take a look at Zurich and Venice. Just got a couple S4's home from Rome yesterday. They were the last 2 on to MSP. They were going to train over to VCE if they didn't get on. Zurich always seems to have some seats available to either ATL or JFK.

Also consider the oddball, non-hub 757 flights to Europe. PIT, PHL and RDU have CDG flights daily. The loads on some of them are quite low on occasion even in mid-summer. Check every day because they can vary a lot from day to day.

Scoop - use flightconnections.com - All flights worldwide on a map to find out who operates between FCO-AMS. Quick look shows EasyJet, Vueling, KLM and Alitalia. Not at Delta yet (8/8 class) so not familiar with ZED options but I'm sure you guys have KLM which we've used in the past.

Might ensure you are on a high speed train to make it, that is a good journey that far north. Or an overnight train as well but you'll likely have to make one or two train changes.

Wife and kid non-rev'd/eZed on transavia to AMS out of Pisa last summer. Contacted them on FB and they were very accommodating on passing the loads. Very no frills but it got them to AMS to get home.

I've used eZeds multiple times. Pay online, refund online. It doesn't give you the exact loads, but at least you get smiley/frowny/angry faces.....

The top left you can select booking/listing... it'll pull up everyone that you have in travelnet. Once you select the people, you can select the airline, and city pair... you can see the the little faces to give you an idea. Once you select the flight it'll give you a fare quote on the next page.

I've used them on multiple carriers before for myself, my parents, as well as my wife. I've also had my parents connect on different airlines using these before.

KLM flies FCO to AMS about 4 times a day. (randomly pulling thrusday all of the loads looked good) Alitalia runs the route 3 times a day. Vueling Airlines goes 1-2 times a day you can eZed on any of these.

There's a top-secret silver bullet. Take the train to Pisa -PSA- then the non-stop to New York. There were over 50 open seats today, and 36 tomorrow. And you don't have to go through the hassle of CDG or AMS. PSA is always a great back-up.

Here's something that caught me by surprise nonrevving internationally: cheap to leave the country and while still cheap, WAY more money to return home.

Yes, foreign airports like Heathrow impose a big departure tax. I don't know why U.S. officials haven't choked that golden goose too. :rolleyes:
