Default zone 3 on deadheads?

Twice this week I've gotten zone 3 on a deadheads. Is this a new thing?

Now I know you might say just board in an earlier zone, that's fine and all but last year a captain and I did that and were told you have to wait and board in your zone. They refused us. With all these passengers standing around looking at us. We talked to his manager and the end result, board in your zone.

Mr tactful response: "Looks like a full flight, I'd be happy to put my bag down in the cargo hold now. Otherwise I'll board with my zone."

Deadheading crew members are permitted to board in zone 1 per Delta policy. Your agent was wrong as they often are.

Where is that written? Thinking I may need the reference in the future. Thanks.

I believe it's in the gate agent handbook. I saved it years ago. Will PM it to you.

Has happened to us on my last two deadheads. They let us put our bags down early, but come back up to board with our zone. They claim it's a recent policy change.

I would probably be too fatigued to continue the rotation....

i'd just board with zone 1 and use my ID as a boarding pass so the kiosk spits out a seat.

From Flight Ops Weekly Update, Feb 10, 2016. I can forward the email to you...PM me if you want it:

Reminder: Deadheading and Jumpseating Crew Boarding Procedures

Recently, there have been questions concerning early/pre-boarding for Deadheading and Jumpseating crew. As a reminder, all positive space business travel, including Deadhead and Deviating from Deadhead crews, should board with Zone One unless you have assigned seats in Delta One/First Class or Delta Comfort+. Delta pilots using the jumpseat may proceed to the aircraft after the captain has boarded. OAL jumpseat riders, including Delta Connection, will be allowed to board when notified by the gate agent.
