Its not "agism" anymore than a mandatory retirement age is agism, or a minimum age for ATP is agism, or any other occupational age limits that exist all throughout society.
Plenty of airlines have done it that way and continue to do it that way. Internet hyperbole about being forced to change it because of age lawsuits is fake news. Age in class is 100% fair and the best way to do it (sorry to all the ninjas with 99XX last 4's) because the older pilots will be forced out sooner and have less time on the list. No one should go ahead of them simply because of a SSN. If its going to change but won't be changed to that, then I guess order interviewed is the second best, with an in class lottery being the next best.
Either way last 4 is just stupid.

Can't tell how much of this is comedy, how much is sarcasm and how much is misunderstanding. Certainly no one is suggesting age would drive one's seniority above anyone hired before them. Age to determine one's seniority amongst a group of 20-75 pilots (one class) seems very reasonable to me though.

Soooooo, say you have a class of 40 with ages ranging from 25-35. All things being equal, that 25 year old now has 39 pilots bidding ahead of him/her for the next 30 years....just because he’s the youngest?
I say use something a bit more arbitrary. Draw straws/numbers, use SSN or play musical chairs.

Its by far more fair than the current system. Ageism lawsuits are fake news; this has been and continues to be the way places do it, so its obviously not a legal issue that matters in the real world (internet fantasy world notwithstanding).
A sensible middle ground could be to base it on who interviewed first. For those on the same day, use a random number generator app. But SSN is asinine.

SSN seems pretty random (and fair) to me. Kinda like drawing numbers from a hat, but it's already been done.

Exactly. 100% fair, because that poor victim of victimhood will have more time to spend on the top of the list making more money. That poor victimized victim's career will be worth years (sometimes decades) more than the older people in their class.

All things being equal in a new hire class, which I would hope we can agree on, drawing names from a hat would be the fairest way to determine seniority. Or, as you point out, base it on the order the job offers went out.

Edit: Is it the young guys fault he made good choices and was hired young? No. Why should he be penalized just because he is younger?
