Based on my new hire class I think that kind of thing could be harder for the younger crowd as most had small children at home. The late 20’s to mid-30’s crowd is usually starting a family and is in the years where it really helps to be home more to help out.

The older folks generally had kids at ages where they were at least able to dress themselves, pack a lunch, and get to the bus stop in the morning. Hell, some were out of high school already.

Still, everyone’s situation is different so
I think some sort of random draw is best. Whether that’s SSN, picking straws, or B.B. at the front of the room with one of those lottery number picking ping pong ball machines is fine with me. I guess the nice thing about SSN is you have some rough idea where you will stand going into class.

Brand S uses age but since they also do a nearly-monthly system bid that lets pilots bid to move to bases with open spots, it's not a huge issue. Even the lowest pilot in the class will get 8-12 chances to bid for their base of choice during their first year. Routine system bids makes a huge positive difference.

As a 40-year old man.... I have very few issues shaming millenials! (Tongue-in-cheek).

My problem with age is why should a young go getter be penalized? I think a random lottery draw is the fairest option.
