Just under one year (8-10 months). About 100 NYC 7ER spots went unfilled from the latest AE, so it will probably come down more as hiring is “planned” to continue into it. Also it’s a seosonal fleet with reserve coverage dropping off in summer months (a few more hard lines) compared to winters.

I'm also wondering about this. Would you mind shooting that PM to me as well?

Class is coming up in a month and I’m still unsure what I want to bid on. I live in the DC area but I’m willing to move to LAX or ATL.

This is what I found from almost a year ago:

DTW - junior FO is on the 717, followed closely by the 320 and 737, all hired since summer 2016.
747, 777, 330, 7ER, 737, 320, 717

MSP - junior FO hired Feb 2016. May be some more junior guys in training. MSP is a relatively senior base with lots of former NWA, but retirements loom.
7ER, 737, 320, M88

NYC - new hires getting NYC, including the 7ER (757/767 domestic and int'l). Second biggest crew base.
330, 765, 7ER, 737, 320, M88 (NYC M88 base is closing), 717

SLC - junior FO hired Aug 2016 on the 320.
7ER, 73N, 320

LAX - junior FO hired Sep 2016. Bombardier C-series coming here first summer 2018.
777, 7ER, 737, 717.

SEA - junior FO hired May 2016.
330, 7ER, 737

CVG - junior FO hired Sep 2014. Very small base, only 75-80 FOs total.
737, M88
I like the 7ER for the international flying but I’m not sure how good QoL is on reserve.

Considerations:
A320 will grow rapidly. 717 seems to have quick progression and almost as quick of an upgrade as the M88, along with more bases to chose from. 737 seems to have better destinations. My SSN puts me in the bottom half.

How fast is seniority progression for A320 NYC? How long until you can hold a line?

Thanks in advance for the help! Looking forward to joining the family. :-)

The dates aren't really relevant anymore. Anything NYC seems to be pretty junior. With 100 7ER slots in NY unfilled there is even room for movement on that.

If you have a specific base you want and there is an a/c in that base available that might make it easy. Otherwise, consider where aircraft have bases. 737 is at all the bases. MD-88 is going to be ATL only. 717, 737, 7ER, A320 are all something you can get in NYC. Each drop is different so consider that. My class didn't have any 7ER slots, but we did have 717 and A320 in NYC (our only 320s were in NYC). Bottom half will be iffy anyway. Expect 717 or MD-88 although there are some surprises, especially if you are willing to take NYC.

MSP might be the only base without new hires in it. I think the junior in the AE to CVG 73N wasn't off IOE yet.

The biggest question you have is whether you are going to move or not. If you are willing to move to a base.........DO IT!!! I'd also suggest looking into DTW as well as ATL and LAX. If you live in base, quality of life on reserve is good. Commuting to reserve sucks! Don't do it! By moving to base you will have more career opportunities and more than likely be able to make a lot more money as well as spend more time at home. I realize commuting can be unavoidable. It was in my case until the DL/NW merger when the base came to me.

The future of this airline seems to be going Airbus with 737's. If I was a new hire now, I'd probably go A320/21 initially. I hate spending time down on Virginia Ave going thru training.

Good Luck with your decision!

I agree. Growing category and seems to be the future at Delta. Sit on it and get senior or upgrade on it when the time comes.

Hired a year ago in NYC320. I sat on Rsv for 7 months, but it was because of the big Bid. They stopped sending people to Ny for about 3-5 months. Right now I sit 50% and can hold weekends off, christmas holidays (on reserve).

Next month I decided to bid specific trips and I got everything I asked for it. Also when the winter storms hit, you’ll get a lot of cancelarlos and reroutes. That could be a downside or if you’re like me, I really don’t care.

Im a commuter and so far it’s been a great base. Another downside is that you might want a crashpad and that’s about $3k a year, unless you want to pay for hotels which are not cheap.

What base will get you a line the quickest on the 737?

What about the rest of the airplanes?

Sadly your question is kind of like asking what the price of bitcoin will be in 2018. Outside the migration of MD88 flying the answer is generally however NYC.
