Sounds like moving bases isn’t a top priority then. Hardly an AE/movement issue if he doesn’t want to go through training.

If you don’t hold your current equipment in that base you can bid on and be awarded any other equipment you can hold after 12 months on any given bid. It was negotiated this way to insure the 2 year lock never trapped a new hire in a base he did not want longer than 12 months.

An entry level pilot will incur a 24-month category freeze. Exception two: A pilot who is in the last 12 months of such category freeze may be awarded an AE or VD to another base for which qualification training is required if he is unable to be awarded an AE or VD to such base in his current position in a given posting. In such event, the balance of his existing category freeze will be added to the category freeze resulting from the new position award.
Example one: An entry level pilot is assigned to the NYC B-767/B-757 First Officer category. In the last 12 months of his category freeze, an AE is posted including vacancies of SLC A-321/320/319 First Officer and B-767/B-757 First Officer. His seniority permits him to be awarded SLC A-321/320/319 First Officer but not SLC B- 767/B-757 First Officer. He may be awarded SLC A-321/320/319 First Officer from such posting.

Thank you for the clarification. I don't think reason it's a misconception is because it's perpetuated by this forum though, it's because of how it's explained to new hires during indoc. I never got any information from this forum about it.

True. Depends on how long the difference would be though. I would take a few extra months commuting vs the extra pain of training if the difference is short. Tough to call with spread out AEs.

If that’s the case any discussion of freezes is irrelevant. He will get a base change only when he can hold that equipment. No freeze applies or applied.

It’s been posted over and over again here since the last contract was signed.

Let me clarify what I meant. He would have 7 months of freeze left on his current aircraft. He could change aircraft now and leave training with 31 months of freeze or change as soon as his current freeze is up and then have another 24 months. Alternatively, he could not train on a new aircraft and let the current lock run out. Then in (theoretically) 13 months when he can hold his dream wide body position he could bid that change.

So, you are correct that a freeze would not keep him from being based in MSP now, but it does not make the consideration of freeze irrelevant.

Default Hiring Wave

I felt like 2014 was a big hiring wave for DAL... when is the next big one? 8,000 pilots in the next ten years...off to a slow start...whens the climax expected.?

I guess 2015, 2016, and 2017 don’t count. So a small dip in 2018 is a crisis? Do some research as it’s been extensively talked about in here.
