The majority of the hiring over the past 4 years has been growth as opposed to retirement replacement. They also had to start getting ahead of things and needed more pilots with all the training going on with all the fleet changes taking place. I don't know exactly what the junior number was at the beginning of 2014 but it sure wasn't the 14500 that we have now. The "growth" part of hiring is going to slow down now (I've heard they are thinking the pilot group will grow to ~16000 pilots total in 7-8 years), but our retirement numbers don't really hit strong for another year or so. Given that our actual retirement numbers are running 15-30% higher each year than projected there is still going to be a huge demand for hiring going forward.

Yes its a crisis?
LOL because no, no its not.
Not even remotely close. We've hired over 4000 since 2014ish and they took a 5-6ish month break and are ramping up again. Our big retirement numbers haven't even hit yet. There is still a mind blowing number of hires to happen.

...although for 3 of the 4 YOY measurements, it did go down. Halving from 17 to 18 is significant. With some more efficiency gains from the company, I wouldn't be shocked if 2019 numbers were less than 2018 since they expect 600 to retire.

He clearly meant that each year hiring has declined since 2014. That’s completely untrue.
And the current hiring plan is 750 this year. We'll see what happens.

I went back and found where JG spoke about hiring in his SkyHub briefing last week. He stated 600-850 at the 43:55 mark in the video but CR also said 600-750 in their newsletter. Then, Bob S. in the comments of the SkyHub briefing (at 34:08) said they finalized the 2019 hiring plan with 750 new hires.

Yes a drop in trend is worth noting. But even 540 is still a very good year. Not ever year can be a record shattering 4 month upgrade bonanza that continues to increase. These are still some of the most phenominal times for someone to be hired and, black swan notwithstanding, will remain so for quite some time.
