Wouldn't we have known on the last AE if there were any unfilled seats for the 88A? The most junior guy wasn't the most junior on the property. We are several AEs away from getting to street Captains.
Also, I'm very, very interested to see how the TA ratification impacts AE bidding. Now that rates are going up again I wonder if the 88 and 717 will start getting more senior upgrades.

Thus, the company is not required to offer an unfilled F/O vacancy to new hires but it is permitted to do so. Nothing is mentioned about unfilled Captain vacancies, most likely because the concept wasn't in the realm of possibility until the last AE and/or because the company really didn't want to offer an unfilled Captain vacancy to a new hire class.
If an unfilled Captain position(s) existed after an AE, I would bet the company just re-offers the unfilled Capt position(s) on the next AE.

You can only do that for a couple of AE's before you run short on Captain's. I would not be surprised to see new hires receive A bids for their first seat. Perhaps 2 to 3 bids from now.

Traditionally, when something goes way out of seniority, you see a swing back to "normalcy" on the next AE. Look at the B7ERA that went extremely (relatively) junior for one bid. Can't touch it now.

Also, isn't there a minimum number of hours in 121 operations to be a Captain?
1000?
Waiverable?
Not sure how many prior 121 folks fill each indoc class...lots of military will not have the mins (or desire) to be a CA right away...and I would bet not every prior 121 guy/gal would either for seniority reasons...

It may become our new norm. We've never seen movement that is upon us. We training department is in overdrive with no relief insight. New hire classes are huge. 2017 starts the retirement tsunami. What used to be true ain't gonna be true no more.
