Is it still best if an entire class is between 30-35? The 30 year old takes a 30 year penalty because of age? Does it make it fair because the last five years would even it out as they slowly moved up to 1?
I get your point but it doesn’t always work that way. An arbitrary/random seniority assignment seems the way to go to me.

First of all - it is not a "penalty." Someone in each class has to be junior. Second, in an airline with 14,000 + Pilots the perceived "penalty" is mostly insignificant. Yes it may affect something at sometime but it also may never come into play.
And remember - the bottom guy is senior to everyone in the class the next week.
I can't believe we are even having this discussion.

I'm not saying there's any realistic fix, but don't downplay the impact of within-class seniority on a new hire and his family. Lucky 9XXXers can easily avoid commuting in many cases, and potentially land in a seat they'll enjoy for years without retraining.

So is the answer to change the method so 1XXXers commute for the first year? No matter what method is chosen, someone is at the bottom. A proper solution is one where new hires aren't trapped in their base through the AE cycle. Establishing a system where pilots could trade bases on the same equipment is a way of alleviating part of the misery.

Exactly....it all dissipates as time passes and classmates move bases and categories. Unless, of course, you are the very last person to be furloughed. Then it becomes a 50,000 lumen spotlight on the power of seniority. But, really, what are the odds of DL ever furloughing again? 😁
