I thought the tip was included in the uber fare!?! Thank goodness I've only used uber a couple of times. Will remember this for future reference.

Instead of tipping the van driver $5 I'll take Uber and pay $3.25

You're right, it's a cashless transaction and tips are not expected.

I didn't read the article but it looks like another I've seen. My understanding is your "rider" rating goes up if you're a good tipper. A nice rating goes a long way towards getting picked up at the airport in your commuter city for a late night ride home, when your sleeping wife doesn't REALLY want to pick you up. :p:D

Both parties are rating each other. If the Uber driver is insisting on the tip or trying to guilt you into a tip, that should be reflected in their rating. Lyft pretty much makes it mandatory by overly enabling tipping and driver recruiting and promotions.
A lot of drivers in California have both stickers in the window but prefer making a Lyft pick up. |
You don't have to tip Uber but I usually do anyway.
It still seems like an amazingly good deal the few times I've used it. I live a little off the beaten path. The other day I needed a ride from my house to somewhere 35 minutes away. Everyone else I know was working and I didn't want to wait. The guy came all the way out to my house (20 minutes from where he was on the interstate) then took me to my destination for $36. Before Uber, a taxi would have either never come out here or it would have been at least $100. Even with the tip it was cheap. And I just got a nice raise and don't mind sharing the wealth. |
It isn't the money, it's the principle of the thing and how it could easily be abused.
