Default San Diego layover tips

If you're staying downtown, check out the Gaslamp Quarter. My favorite restaurants and bars are:
  • Bondi (Australian restaurant/bar; my fave hangout downtown)
  • Dakota (variety of food)
  • Greystone (steakhouse)
  • J Bar (upscale bar with lots of scenery)
  • Rama (Thai)
  • On Broadway (largest nightclub in San Diego)
  • Sammy's Woodfired Pizza
  • House of Blues (concerts, food)
  • Maloney's (Irish bar and restaurant)
  • Side Bar (bar)

I grew up in San Diego, I'd also reccomend (time and money permitting of course)

- Kansas City BBQ
- Anthony's Fish House
- The Green Flash (in Pacific Beach if you can get there, not too far from downtown)
- Mr. A's

Love the KC BBQ, the bar where top gun was filmed--if you're into that kind of stuff. Great prices and cheap beer (inexpensive). If you get a real long layover, go check out and tour the USS Midway. It's on the waterfront just a few blocks from KC BBQ. The navy guys might not find it really exciting, but it's pretty cool for us civilian types.

You MUST have breakfast at the Family House of Pancakes in Chula Vista. 6 egg stuffed omletes w pancakes for about $7

"With high gas prices and killer mortgage payments, San Diegans are all about a good bargain. There is no need to clip coupons here at the Family House because the portions are so huge you can feed off of an omlette for three days.

The pancake selection is fantastic. My family was in town last week for a graduation and they wanted to go to Aunt Emma's on E St., but we came to Family House instead and everyone was satisfied. Their salsa is delicious, their omlettes are famous and it's a total steal.

There is a wait if you get there at critical mass (around 10 am on a Saturday or Sunday) but it's totally worth the wait. We showed up at around 8:30 and only waited a few minutes for a party of 11."

"My parents started taking me here when I was just a wee one (30+ years ago). Whenever I'm back in town I like to go, for the great food and for old times sake. Great for families if you beat the rush. HUGE portions so you can share if you like. YUM YUM and YUM"

Kind of a long way to go just for pancakes isn't it?

You obviously have never been there.

757Driver...Here's the deal:

If you find yourself in San Diego go there and order any one of the 6 egg omlettes. They come with a side of pancakes. I like the omlette that is stuffed with shredded beef and peppers and topped with their home made salsa. Have a cup of coffee and relax and enjoy the breakfast. The bill should come to about $10 plus tip. Get a receipt and if you message me a copy of the bill I will send you the money. Then you can post here if it was worth the trip. I am sure you will say yes it was.....

....Of course I have spent 3 days traveling from NY to Bangkok to spend one night there and thought that was worth the trip also. Love free airfare!!!!!!

Downtown: Anthony's is a tourist trap...instead go south down the boardwalk to the Fish Market (near Seaport Village). The bar and restaruant are great and affordable, and if you want to spend some serious dough go upstairs to Top of the Market. Serious sea food either way.

Also Max's Steakhouse is tasty, with an upscale trendy atmosphere (and prices to match). 5th Av.

Pacific Beach: World Famous is awesome for any meal, including breakfast (on the boardwalk near the Green Flash).

May as well talk about bars too...

Meat Markets:
The bar at Humphries Hotel (35+), Shelter Island
PB Bar and Grill (21+), Pacific Beach
Barefoot bar (21+), Pacific Beach

Atmosphere:
The hotel bar on the top floor of the downtown Hyatt Regency.
The Waterfront: Oldest bar in San Diego, Little Italy near downtown.
McPees: Coronado Island, Orange Av (do NOT pick a fight here...you will not win)
Aero Club: Great dive bar, very old, aviation nostalgia. Live music some nights, but always has the neighborhood bar atmosphere. India street, north of the airport.

There are also numerous bars and restaruants on 4th and 5th Av downtown.
