Gives everybody extra time to practice their gate PAs and galley announcements.
Thanks for all you do!
Really nice of them to ignore pbs and software recommendation and force this through for April.

Perfect, they make our schedules go to crap and we have to negotiate something to get back to where we were.

Union said they're working on it. I think this can be fixed outside of negotiations. I'm just saying it doesn't need to be contractual. It's one month, they're trying it. I imagine they're trying to collect data and see what works. Let's not start a desk fire in the crew room just yet

We are losing 1-2 days off a month with firebreaks, something that the company didn't test and released without any note in bid packs or anything to us. For commuters that sucks. If they want us to cut them slack, how about they do the same for us? I've never managed a hotel room on a 4 hour 15 sit or early release "because they might need to deadhead me". Tired of hearing "I helped out CS and did XYZ". Do they help me on last day IROPs when I'm going to have to extend to finish and have a chance of going home? Hell no.

Seriously? Qol items like that are exactly what capital is for. I'm tired of donating 3-4 hours a day sometimes in sits at the airport. Pay me and I'll do it all day. 99.9% of pilots in NYC already commute and now they get a double nut punch.

That's what this is, a test. The best way to see if something works is to try it. You can run simulations all day, but let's find out.
And as far as negotiating improvements go, let's say you get one shot and want to negotiate one item, are you gonna tell me a duty rig is one of them? I looked through my pairings for the past two months and found one day that would've been improved by a duty rig.
Maybe you just need to bid differently or get a little more seniority.
Fwiw, I've often had the conversation, "why don't they build in a little more time in between these NYC flights when you're stacked up all day"? You're mad at them now, but you'll also be the first to complain when you have a 12 hour day with all 20 minute turns and no time for food because the first of 5 legs was delayed.
I'm not even on reserve, and I think our most important negotiating item should be improving reserve life. I'd fix that first.

Possibly with so many commuters they need a lot of rsv’s to cover missed commutes

Long stay hotels, reduce the number to 16 hours.
Emphasis on more commuteable trips. (More 5 days, better 4 days)
This is where I'd start. The company admits that bypassing FO's is a problem. They need more captains. Well maybe they're all bypassing because reserve life is miserable. Substantial improvements to reserve life and the captain shortage is over.

Several things. If we flip to Delta's reserve system, where everyone is on LCR but escalated to short call 3-4 times per month max, commuters could stay home and know that when they come in they're going to get used. LCR get used first, so you'll see better usage for more than just one leg. Less escalation to short call. Fewer total reserves, etc. And dropping wouldn't be an issue as much because fewer people would do it.
