IIRC, that was one of the points (maybe the only positive point) that United tried to sell to passengers when they had Q400s in the mix.

Delta will return to turboprops just after Southwest returns to a fleet that isn't all B737.

One problem OO had when evaluating the -400 was the wingspan and footprint it takes on the ramp. Can park three deuces in the same space.

CAL put the Q400 on the BOS-EWR run for a while and bookings went down. That run is dominated by high revenue business travel. The flying public saw a turboprop as dangerous and they avoided it. They don’t understand that a modern turbofan engine is basically the same thing, but it’s all about perception. I rode on the Q400 several times. It is a nice cabin, but when you cruise in the mid 20’s, it can make for a rough ride. I hate the cramped 50 seat jets, but I’d rather cruise at FL330 than be down low in a nicer cabin getting kicked around. My guess is that the airlines just look different after this is over. Scope isn’t getting relaxed unless a bankruptcy judge does it, and the legacies will either adapt quickly during the recovery, or slowly as the 50 seat jets age out of the fleet.

I was walking behind a group of businessmen once and when they saw a Q400 sitting at the gate one of them said “man look at that old thing! Can you believe they still fly those?” To which the other guy said “that must be so inefficient.”

It was the newest, most efficient airplane in the entire terminal, but they just saw it as an old pile of junk. People don’t want to fly on airplanes with spinny things on the wings.

GTF engines are optimized for high altitude cruise, they burn considerably more fuel on the short routes(less than 500nm).
