Forced upgrades

Ironically, this may have the effect of pushing out FO's to LCC's and other carriers. Those that were content of living in base until a CA position became available in base are now looking at a commute to NYC. No better time to jump ship if an outside offer is available.

Which is a feature, not a glitch. Any FO with 1000 121 hours who is not putting in for upgrade is simply depriving FOs with fewer hours of the hours needed to get their opportunity to upgrade. They are blocking the queue, not helping it. FOs are replaceable by those waiting for a class date, but with the supply of DECs nearly exhausted, no regional can stand the luxury of letting someone be a career FO. Better they go find some LCC/ULCC where they can career FO to their hearts content.
They say any pilot in upgrade training can withdraw and accept a 48 month seat lock. A career FO might do just that, it certainly doesn’t sound like an up or out mentality.
I read on the SkyWest forum that forced upgrades did not help their CA/FO ratio. I think they started forced upgrades in early November so there should have been positive results by now.
I can see both sides but feel your tone was a little harsh.

An FO waiting until they can hold their preferred base as captain is not necessarily a career FO. At a major it would probably be considered perfectly acceptable to value quality of life and wait until you were more likely to be able to hold a line in your base to bid captain, especially at places with poor reserve rules.

The boat is sinking. Anybody unwilling to row or bail is dead weight that needs to be jettisoned. That may be harsh but it’s also reality.

experienced FO
Hey Everybody,
If I apply, not as a DEC, but as an experienced FO, CL-65 TYPE, 8K 121 TSIC; 3K 135 TSIC BEECH 1900D, will I end up getting forced into the left seat sooner than later? I have been out of flying for 4 years, recent GA piston single BFR and IPC only. I think I would benefit from some time in the right seat.
Thanks.

for them to hire you into the right seat unless you take that seat lock.

Apply to somewhere where you can simply tell them that you are going to need a few hundred hours in the aircraft - especially if it’s NOT a CL-65 - before you are willing to upgrade. They are desperate enough for even near upgrade eligible CAs that it ought not to be a problem. Alternatively, get a little bit current and apply to a ULCC. They’ll take you in a heartbeat with a new type in 737 or A320.
