Yeah, that's a pretty good way of putting it. The CP's job, imo, is to be the liaison between the pilots and management. Duty pilots are pretty much the same thing, except they can help expedite things you may need on the road. They have been helpful in helping me navigate some 117 issues and the Rockwell Collins GPS glitch that happened over the summer.
Approach them as you would management, and you'll be fine. We have union resources at our disposal, so use them.

Yep. He came to recurrent class in place of TW, told us that "latency is always the pilot's fault," then told us that we should never drop the brake until we're about to push. He said that he'd rather have us out ten late than have us take a latency hit, even if the door is closed and the cockpit and cabin are ready to go. Ramp blocked? Too bad. Tug broke? Too bad.

Nah, the union already weighed in on this. Business as usual, drop the brake when the cabin door closes. If the company wants to redefine how we are paid, they can negotiate for it. Correctly report the latency reason, but start the pay clock as usual.
Also, nobody is concerned about when we get to the gate and have to wait 20 minutes for a ground crew to marshall us in? A gate agent to drive the jet bridge? Where is the data collection on that?

Yes they "weighed in," (it's in the email I referenced) also saying to file a pilot issue form if instructed to do otherwise by base management. I'm no expert on the inner workings of the machinery, but I suspect that that would be more effective in fixing that error than filing an APC post.
I'll be honest with you... I didn't, and I've been kicking myself for it.
Our class pretty much heckled him for an hour, so we didn't put any weight into what he was saying. That totally was the type of event to report when it happened, though, and I won't make that mistake again.

Actually to add my own PIREP of interactions with him, while working under him I was dealing with a work-life issue of basically the highest possible severity, and through our conversations I felt like he was a stand up guy who had my back, and felt comfortable to act however necessary to deal with my issue.

Normally I'd tell you to give him some sort of gentle ribbing but he got sorta serious and takes that CP job serious. Even reminds you he's a CP in conversations while you're talking about other work crap. That's not to say he's bad or power tripping, he's just not the fun guy I remember.
Life bites us all boys and girls, keep in mind he did an awful lot of union volunteer work that required dedication and competancy before he went management. The old CF is in there somewhere. Encourage him to go back and fight for the angels again.
