To each their own. The sky isn't falling in MSP or DTW.

I am wondering how a commuter from the Midwest who draws a NY base will fare when it comes to the QOL (commute times/time diff) and the added expense of crash pad in NY? My guess is that commuting will almost always mean traveling a day early unless P3. I am not sure how this will play out on the return side. What does a crash pad in NY go for these days? It begins to look a bit unattractive even with the "bonus". Thoughts and/or insight?

A new hire today will peobably be stuck in NYC for just a month or two until they can shift to DTW or MSP. It takes a vacancy or two to build up the base. I wouldn't sweat it too much.

$200 a month for a crashpad is what my friend is paying. Free transportation to the airport via company shuttle.

I thought long and hard about this as I packed and left my house with the intent to move to base (living in the Endeavor hotel now). But even though I have LGA-900 I still plan to move to Michigan and wait out the vacancy bid back to DTW. The cost of living difference is truly phenomenal. I believe what WMU is saying to be true. Hopefully if there is another vacancy bid in Sep or Nov it won't be an issue.

Edited to add: By bring, he means have available. Everything for setting up leisure travel for dependents is sent via email. So if you have it on Google Drive or DropBox, you are golden.
I'll put this out there for all new hires. Make sure to bring copies or have PDF copies of all birth certs, marriage certs, etc for you and every family member who you want to add to non-rev travel. They don't tell you that on the CJO day but you need that stuff. Also for benefits enrollment.

Good point. I sent that inadvertently targeting an older audience like myself who might not yet have caught up to 21st century technology. Fortunately, I had all that crap on a flash drive, which is my version of the DropBox. Either way, we had people in our class who were totally caught off guard and frustrated that nobody told them.

I hear ya. I have all my important "stuff" on Drive, so I can access it from anywhere. It's only an issue if a person wants to sign their family up the first week.

I personally wouldn't recommend coming here unless you want to plan on living in/commuting to NYC for 6+ months. There are a lot of people above you that are stuck in NYC and looking to get MSP or DTW. Getting it in the next vacancy if you are a new hire today is a pipe dream.
Don't forget: even if you are awarded the base you want in a possible October vacancy, you probably won't move until December or January.

Sure there's a lot of focus on NYC right now, but this isn't a shock or anything. Bear in mind how many plans we've seen in the last few months.
