Go to Envoy Air?

Hi all, my question is if Envoy is a good move in you guys opinions. I'm currently flying the 777 at Southern/Atlas, they can't get their negations worked out and it may be years. Currently upgrade is 9 years to the left seat of the triple. I'd like to make a little more money, gain more turbine PIC, and be based at home eventually(DFW). I flew the E175 at Mesa prior to Southern and would not go back. On paper it looks like Envoy may be the best option if I'm looking for PIC time immediately, and would like to be eventually based at home. Anyone know any direct entry captains who recently joined Envoy, or new hire FO's?

If you come to Envoy you’re going to be a captain on the 145 in LGA. There are no if’s, and’s, or buts. You can also add an additional year and a half to your time on reserve as wait to catch up to where your seniority can hold a line. There is talk that LGA is going to 130 lines this summer, which helps your case, but there are still a lot more people to upgrade ahead of you.

Bottom line, if you’re willing to work under a reserve system filled with airport standby, and pre-assigned 0400 standby, then welcome aboard, your coffee mug and coozie are on the table.

If you can stand the LGA base it might not be bad. It doesn't seem like many regional pilots live in NYC, except one crazy yahoo who bid ORD last class lol.

As MD said you will get LGA 145. You won’t have a choice. If cool with that go for it.

In your position I'd maybe look at spirit before envoy. Pretty sure that's enough time to get on there, and with the new TA the pay isn't horrible...plus, they have a DFW base and I don't believe the upgrade is all that long....but don't quote me on that. Envoy is a good option for many, but not everyone....now if you were truly ok with sitting reserve in LGA for a long time, it may not be horrible, but don't let them convince you that you'll get DFW in 12 months. I'd plan for more like 2 to 3 years based on how things are looking there. Possibly longer.

I turned down an interview with Southern for the B777. With the crappy pay and nine years to upgrade, it seemed like a miserable tenure to be had by all, not to mention the Atlas factor.
What others have said about being forced to LGA Capt on reserve for the foreseeable future is what I'm hearing too.

As a guy who is on reserve in LGa as a Captain, it’s not the best situation but if you can drive to work it’s not the worse. It’s tough on me for the cross country commute. Having said that, the crews are great, the flying is fun.... CS is a cluster at the moment and they make stuff up as they go. You will routinely question if what they are doing is legal, they will try and take advantage of you being a new guy. Once you figure out the system and how to “play the game” it’s not to bad.

I agree with every bit of this.

Since there are a number of people who leave regionals to go to Southern/Atlas I think you'll be adding a big question mark on your resume if you go from flying a 777 to flying an RJ. I never worked at Envoy, but I can't see it being a better QOL than whatever you have there myself.

If you're looking at maybe using the flow to get on with AA I guess that works, but if you're just wanting out of that rut I'd suggest trying hard with Spirit et al first. If you do go to an RJ operator, I'd guarantee that you'd be asked why you decided to do it and will need a good answer.

Really, PIC isn't as important now as it used to be. I think having heavy transoceanic time probably checks a few boxes itself.

All that said, if 777 F/O there pays less than an RJ captain, I don't blame you for wanting to run away.

Assuming you have a degree and no skeletons in your closet, I’d tough it out where you’re at. The heavy time will make you more marketable than flying an rj and you should be able to get scooped up by a major sooner than later.
