Different time, different result. Depends how much flying is going on and the company has said it will stick to the contract, only allowing them at the beginning or end of a block of reserve days.

I never broke $400 aggressively seeking overnights and paying for hotels when unsucessful in ORD, but that was when CS actually gave us the 4 commuter hotels. I averaged about 9-10 nights in hotels a month. Probably looking at about the same now. Prices are down, but the company is pocketing the savings with commuter hotel policy gutted and rendered largely worthless.

yeah the No Fly Zone sucks. I spend 5 days per week in ORD too junior to proffer most of the time and too senior to get called. Averaging 10 hours per month this year, mostly OT.

When i was in ORD, I couldnt get any overnights despite proffering for everything. Never could find a hotel under $55 either. Hotels with crew rates always just said "we re out of rooms for crew rate". I strongly suggest making other arrangements. That could be staying with a friend, a crash pad, a small RV... something. Will reduce the stress for sure and, based on my experience, will save you money.
I stayed there once and regretted it but I'm kind of a fancy guy

Days Inn by Wyndham Elk Grove Village was normally about $55 OTD with hourly dropoff and on-call pickup at O'Hare if you're cool with brown towels, bad mattresses etc. They even had free lucky charms, mostly not spoiled milk and old fruit in the morning. Plus, even the cheapest Wyndham property nets you the standard 1000 pts. Book through the Wyndham app with the code from the AA Deals & Discounts site.

That s still not less than the number I gave. I ended up in a $200 per mo crash pad which was a lot less than $700 or so on hotels. Other pad mates were rarely there which made it not so bad but if I had more time to plan things out, I d have done it with a Roadtrek 190 for a variety of reasons. But I ve got RV experience and feel comfortable about doing that. Would not be for everyone, particularly in the winter months.
